The plastic gears inside the motors harden and split over the years, aftermarket replacements are available in brass, one example here;

The window lift mechanism does come out the door, but it takes getting it in just the right position to do so. You'll need to disconnect the lift arm from the glass and the lift mechanism from the door (3 bolts if I recall) That probably doesn't help a lot, but it is tough to explain in writing.

I tried to send you a message but I think I deleted your post instead...you were spot on...it is the gear and thanks to your link I know where to get one from...thanks very much for your help
I have taken my original motors out of my car and installed Taurus motors.

I had no problems. I don't understand why you might be?

If those motors are jammed, don't bother repairing them. Get some rebuilt Taurus motors for $30 or so each and put them in.

They are more dependable, inexpensive, readily available and faster than the originals.
I managed to remove the motors, the drivers side was much easier...it's just the ducellier gear that's broken...a simple fix once the parts arrive, I'm not that clever to start changing the type of motors and we don't have Taurus in the UK anyway..so hopefully this is the easiest way....1 problem down many more to go like why are my heater controls jammed?
The early Pantera heater controls are fully mechanical bowden cables. One hooks to the heater control valve which is problematic at best. Some leak and most are misadjusted. Due to the lever lengths, it is impossible to adjust the heater valve so it is both OFF when set to off, and full-on when set to heat. Its possible yours are either misadjusted, the cables are hooked up wrong or disconnected. Many Panteras have a separate on/off water valve installed somewhere in the system. Trace out the heater hoses and see if yours has this mod. Note-this has nothing to do with the cable controls sticking but it will influence the defroster efficiency- which you'll need in England.
