Just wanted to let anyone who has paid duty when importing a Pantera (25 years or more old) into Canada that after much digging and web-searching, I finally gave up and just called the nice people at Canada Customs and ASKED what the duty rate was on an antique car made in Italy. I was told there was NO DUTY if the car was 25 years old, regardless of where it was made.

Today, when bringing in my Mangusta, I was told I would pay 6.1% duty on it. I had to convince 3 border officials that there was no duty owed and they then called for verification and found I was right. Nice to know that they were more than happy to charge me a huge whack of money ILLEGALLY!

To make up for it they spent an hour trying to verify that I was telling the truth about the price I paid (I was).

My suggestion to any of you who did pay when importing a car is to file a request for repayment with them. I don't know the process, but there is one, for sure and you should get a refund.

Update

Thanks to Mark, I called the Canadian Border Services Agency today and was told by two senior officials that ... YES ... you DO NOT have to pay duty when you import a car that is 25 years or older.

If you have already paid duty when importing your cat (like Doug and I did), you can make an Adjustment Request using this form:

http://cbsa.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/b2g.pdf

Just photocopy your Vehicle Import Form and your receipt for the duty paid (the blue Customs form) and send it off.

I will let you know how I make out ...

Thanks again, Mark!
Wow, this just gets better and better!

Duty Free

I pulled up this thread as I am shipping some tail light housings to BC.

As some of you found out, because vehicles older than 25 years are exempt, the importation of your Pantera should have been duty free. Big refund.

But if I am reading this right, parts used solely or principally on qualified 25 year-old vehicles are also exempt. And while the date of manufacture is noted in relation the vehicles, there is no such reference applied to the date of manufacture of PARTS for those vehicles.

So, Pantera specific items, or part numbers, even if made recently, should also be exempt from import duty fees.

Am I reading this correctly?

Armed with this information, I bet you could argue the point that ANYTHING coming from a Pantera vendor (since they only sell items for 25 year-old cars) and other items (such as Jon Haas' Pantera Electronics items, Fluidyne radiators made for Panteras, etc) should also be exempt from duty tax.

Have any of you tried out, or inquired about, this angle on the regulations?

Yes. Regardless of WHEN they were made, all parts made EXCLUSIVELY for a vehicle that is 25 or more years old are Duty Free. The only problem is that most Customs Officials don't know their own rules and you need to have the above reference for them to check.
