Information tags under hood

Sorry, but you are confusing me…

Your first picture has the plate that typically goes on the pedal box, the “cut out” in the aluminum plate shows the cars VIN number on it, and the motuere number is stamped below on the aluminum plate.

Your second picture shows what I would expect to see on the driver side of the engine bay (in a LHD CAR), which shows the engine number as a four-digit value, that should correspond to a number stamped onto the back of the block on the same side of the car is the plates.

The two pictures that you have in your original post sure look like the database plates that I have on my 1973 “L” Model2-

There is also a plate on the inside of the driver's door that has the VIN number as well.

The last four digits of the VIN number should be stamped on the portion of the headlight buckets.

I understand your confusion. I don't have the tag on the pedal box, hence my confusion. About thirty years ago I stored the car for a few years while out of the country and mice ate a lot of the front trunk material, so I replaced the material with a new carpet. I don't know if it never had that tag or if I removed it at that time and never reinstalled it. I checked, it's not under the carpet. I may have the tag in the stacks of stuff that has accumulated over the years but just don't know. All other VIN number locations and matching motor numbers are in order. The car has never been hit or restored, just repainted.

Might some cars have been issued without that tag?   

Upon closer investigation, there is no tag is under the carpet, but the correct VIN  etc. is stamped into the metal of the pedal box. Go figure.

Look for rivet holes that would have held down the plate.  If you can find the four holes then your car definitely had a plate.

Agree with Steve.  Your front trunk looks great.  The VIN is stamped into the metal, and the aluminum plate has a hole in it, so you can see the stanping.

Somebody (probably you) has done a good bit of work up there, noted by the CNC Clutch Master Cylinder, and so it may be likely that the aluminum plate was removed?  I think to install a new clutch master, it's beneficial to take that plate off the front of the pedal box.

Might one of our vendors be able to provide a preplacement?

Very long ago I replaced both master cylinders. And had the entire petal assembly out. I can’t remember the plate, but at my age that’s not surprising. I don’t know why I would have removed the ID plate but will look into getting a replacement. PI should have them, don’t you think?
Because I run Webers on the car, I added a vacuum pump for the brakes.
