Started to rebuild the brakes and suspension on my Mangusta. The car braked poorly and seem to pull to the right. Took the brakes off and started with this.
Took the calipers apart and noticed a lot of rust along the cylinder walls and pistons. These are old Girling 3 piston calipers. They are very large almost like old Corvette brake calipers.
The pistons were scored and rusted in parts so new stainless pistons were ordered from GT car parts in Arizona as well as new rebuild kits. The old pistons on the right and the new stainless pistons on the left
After assembly new pads were ordered from England for the Girling calipers. They had the stock replacements and more grippier pads. I opted for the latter ones. Here is a photo of the parking pad, front brake pad and rear pad before replacement.
You should post the part numbers of the various pieces that you procured. Reason being is that yours is the first car that I have seen with the three piston front calipers. I have an old seal set for a three piston caliper, but not sure if it is for a front Goose caliper, as I've never seen one before!
The rears are the same as on my car. They actually say Fiat-Girling on them. These are unusual. Another one that has them is #822 down in AZ. These were used on Fiat 2300's. My small pistons in them were toast, but the large ones were in great shape! I had to get new parts from Girling in the UK...Thankfully there was a Goose owner that was just about 10 miles down the road from them and he was able to hand carry them over here one year when he attended the POCA fun rally in Vegas! These were the most expensive parts I had ever purchased for the Goose, and also about the first parts I ever purchased...in trying to get the car back on the road!!!!
If you post the numbers, then others will be able to dig them up to from various Girling vendors.
I'll look up the numbers and post them for others. What type of front brake calipers came normally on earlier Mangustas if not the 3 piston Girling calipers? By the way the stainless pistons and parts were quite expensive all items came to $1,000, I just wanted something that will last. Ben
I had my Pantera calipers rebuilt by this company. John Farrell Auto My pistons were rusty and the seals shot. They dismantled and plated the calipers, new stainless pistons and new seal kits. Nice prices and good guy to work with. I also purchased the springs and bleeders from this company. Jenson
Goose brakes are nothing like the Pantera version. Pretty unique.
Ben, I think it depends on where you do your Girling shopping....but if you replaced it all, the $1000 was not toooo far off base. I seem to remember a little tiny sandwich bag full of some bits costing me well over $300!! ...and that was 10+ years back!
Normally, the Goose received the standard two piston Girling caliper type "CR" I believe. They were used on a couple odd large British cars, and also some of the 427 Street Cobras. Also perhaps on the street GT-40.
Since Girling made many different calipers with apparently the same mounting patterns, it looks like DeTomaso took whatever they could deliver!!!
Having the part numbers will be a great reference for your style being that they are so rare!! Steve
I cannot imagine having to send a Girling caliper as used in the Mangusta, to a shop to have rebuilt. There is one rubber piece, the o-ring, seal, retractor (pick one....) and the piston. Both parts are available if you know where to look. If your car has been driven over the years and the fluids replaced at some sort of regular interval, there should be little to no pitting in the pistons. (Pitting in the caliper bore is a non-issue unless you are talking epic erosion...)
If you can safely pop the pistons out using air pressure, and clean all the parts up, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to install two rubber retractors, and two pistons.
I would recommend a tube of brake assembly lube.
Other than this, there really is nothing fancy about a Girling caliper. Basic brakes, not even any dust shields on them!!
The Girling kits for the front three piston calipers are #2577 and for the three piston rear calipers are #2524. The stainless pistons are order corresponding to the kits are from GT car parts in Arizona. Hope that helps. Ben
My seal kits are the same part number also. A couple of the stainless pistons. The pistons I used are 64320163 & 64325111 for the front and 64325436 & 64325863 for the rear, from John Farrel, about $24 each.
My rear calipers used the same small PN# pistons and seal kit. (My large pistons were OK for some strange reason, but smalls were toast!)
Where does your car's SN fit in the production lineup?? I'm not sure if the 19L3 date on your front caliper translates like Ford casting dates to Nov 19, 73 or not....ie were the front calipers replaced?
My two caliper castings have very tiny dates stamped in them indicating mine were made in January of 69, or perhaps assembled....not sure.
From where does John Farrel do business?
There is a guy out of LA, Ray Hulbert who also caries seals and some pistons I believe.
These pieces look very nice!!!
Great info again!!! Makes this a great post! Be sure to post some pic's of your rears when you get all the ebrake stuff put back together to show how the bent rod and other bits look!
Mine seem to be a little different in the material that makes up the e-brake assy's. More flat steel than cast. Steve
I have one 3 piston seal/retractor set still in FIAT packaging #901005 (If I can read the old ink properly!) These may be for a GT5 Pantera rear brake kit....
The 4 small retractor rubbers have stripes on the back RED RED WHITE but the larger two retractor rubbers have no markings.
Girling codes their seals with paint stripes. If you can provide the paint stripes to a Girling guy...he can get you the proper replacements based upon these codes!
