Muffler coating

Thought about it, but not been there.

The high T flat black may look okay for the headers/mufflers etc., but personally I wouldn't do the chrome tips. If they are bad I'd cut off the existing ones and reweld new ones on.

I'm in teh process of sandblasting my front lower A arms and I'm contemplating powder coating them...maybe even chrome color.

Power coating will melt at high temps. Powder coating any exht components is questionable. If the temps exceed 400 degree it is likely the color will fade and worst case the paint burn off.

Look to Hot jet Coating it will not have any temp issues.

Give me a call, you have my number in the RPT listing. There is a great Powder coating shop in Reno. Very cost effective and does great work. They will do all of the plasting, prep and painting. I used them for three car projects, very durable. The only problem is he runs the side project work in the back ground so not the fastest for turn arounds.

The company I talked to does a lot of exotic coatings over and above normal powder painting. I'll give him a call and see what his take is on it. I'll relay his comments to the DTBB for further discusson

Thanks, I have a powder coat gun and Lab oven... so was going to give the smaller parts a try myself. Even so a good resource locally is handy for the rest.

I've seen some powders quoted specifically for headers etc. good up to 1200F.

Let's pick it up and talk further on Sunday! I may even have one A arm coated by then! I gotta get it back on te car to come to the Tech Session...

This is just an MGB with a GM V6 but here is my headers Jet-Hot coated. I also just got my Trans Am header Jet-HOT coated. They have a pretty quick turn around time:

Biggest problem I see with Jet Hot Coat is any amount of engine puke, engine oil, etc, will stain them forever. . .

I have freshened up my mufflers with flat black hi-temp engine paint. I masked off the chrome tips.
Does not look bad.

The chrome tips on mine are badly pitted.If the powder coating isn't the answer, where do you get replacement tips?

Hey Johneye... I had mine ceramic coated and they turned out great. The guy didn't know what the effects would be putting the coating over the chrome, but two years later they still look good and no problems with cracking or peeling at the tips. Oh... they were pretty rusted when I took them over. Hope this helps

JK, I've been able to clean burned-on oil from my Jet Hot coated headers. Just used a little Mother's. No adverse effects so far.

If you're a do-it-yourselfer, you might try techline coatings. I've used both their satin black and cermaic chrome with good results. Requires sand blasted surface prep only. The black did not require oven post cure, just successive heating from exhaust heat. The silver chrome requires post cure in oven but can be polished afterward. Both can be applied with conventional painting equipment. I'd still suggest shipping off your headers however for professional treatment if your pocket book cna stand it. -They get coated inside and out at the pros. Mufflers are more problematic in this regard.

Where did you find an oven large enough to cure them? Thats a pretty large piece with the exhaust pipe.

Jet Coat does come in different colors. My headers came in the standard sliver color, but I had my exhaust and muffler coated in a black color. That way the road crud does not stain the mufflers.

I'd say the appearance is that of satin black spray paint but very even. I can't really comment on durability, the claims are with properly prepped surfaces and curing, it is far superior to high temp paints as far as stain and rust resistance. Cant really tell from this picture but it's the best I have.
