Hi all,
I have 180 headers with two "bottle" type mufflers that exit directly out the rear grill.
They are far too loud....... does anyone have any suggestions for a much quieter muffler(s) to use instead? The engine is a fuel injected hipo alum head engine and the mufflers have a 4" inlet and 4" outlet.
Thanks in advance, Steve

Steve,

At the 2015 Concours Italiano, I noticed a very nice Pantera with 180's. When it started-up, it sounded great but I remember being surprised that it wasn't louder. The owner told me the mufflers were Borla XR1 Multicore Racing mufflers. Rather than having one length of perforated tubing inside the muffler, Borla's multicore units split the flow into 3 or 4 lengths of 1" perforated tubing. They also use stainless steel packing material, so they don't burn out. If I recall, the Pantera had 3" mufflers not 4".

There are a number of side pipe inserts available from several sources.

Check with manufacturers of "Cobra" side pipes. There are inserts for them that will take the "edge" off of the sound.

Basically these inserts are made for 3" and 4" cores. They actually will fit inside of your 3" core mufflers.

They start as something like 40" or 48" muffler cores, either 2-1/2" or 2" od's and they just cut them to length and weld stainless sleeves on the ends to hold them in place.

You can actually slide them out for a day at the track, then just slide them back in for the drive home.

As I recall, they measurably drop the sound 10 decibels?

The Corvette side pipes use them also since the 'Vette guys have the same noise issues with them.

Summit has them listed as a stock item under the Patriot brand. I don't know the original supplier but there may be just one or two that get repackaged.

I do know they are available in stainless or mild steel. I believe they are fiberglass packed and the packing is replaceable.
