I am new here, and I did not know where to post this question. I just inherited my dads 71 Pantera. The last time he drove it was 2 years ago. He said it needed a throwout bearing. I am going to pick it up, and get it running, but then I need a shop to do the bearing. I cannot drop the engine in my garage. (edited) Also the car has excess of 450 HP. The block is probably the only original engine piece. The car only has 18000 miles, so the clutch might be original, but I think I remember my dad saying It had a twin plate clutch. Are the throw out bearings the same for aftermarket clutches? I am wondering if I need to order a whole new clutch kit, or just the bearing. IF I do order a clutch kit is the one on PIM.net good? If not please tell me where to find a decent one. Also is there a shop in the Philadelphia area with Pantera experience. My mechanic will be close and cheap, but I want it done right. Sorry for the long post. Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Welcome aboard. I would pull the transaxle and then determine your course of action. Removal of the transaxle is fairly straight forward although there are some "tricks". PanteraPlace.com is a great website for "How-To" information. What is the VIN for your car? Does is have have mounting brackets on the sides of the transaxle or on the very back?
Thanks... The image of the slave cylender on your dads car is more likley the problem that the TO bearing. Thanks John Buckman for seeing that. Geeze, the whole clutch may be seized? Can you roll the car? What does the clutch pedal feel like? My suspition is the slave vent/ realease is installed at the bottom of the slave instead of the top.wrong and the clutch will not open. Thanks again.. JB
2 inces should be enough travel. if the car has been sitting for a while, it is likley that the disc have frozen to the pressure plate and flywheel. I let mine get wet when I painted my trans bay and it only took a week to LOCK up. If your not getting disengaugement.... try rocking the car with it in gear. It may break the disc free. This did not work for me, so I started my car in gear, and drove the piss out of it. That busted the disc into 1000 of pieces, and when I tore it down, there were still pieces stuck to the plate! If your going to use the car... your gonna want these wear items to be fresh anyway. Bill 1362
If the clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel, try this:

Jack up the rear of the car so that the rear wheels are off the ground about 2 or 3". Put the shifter in 5th gear (any gear will work) and start the engine. The rear wheels will be turning when the engine is running. With the engine at or near idle, depress the clutch pedal and then quickly apply the brakes. This should free the clutch disc from the flywheel, unless it is "permanently fused" to the flywheel as Bill's was. In some cases, you may have to do this a couple of times.

Exercise caution when doing this. Block the front tires and make sure that there is some extra room in front of the car, just in case something goes wrong (jack slips), and you have to shut down with the ignition key/brakes.

John
