I know of five previous owners of this GTS. I know three of them personally and met a fourth. The one I never met was the one who smashed it up, although I did speak with him on the phone.

The first owner of this car bought it in Montreal in the mid '70's and brought it out to BC. He was a friend of my Father's and gave me my first job! The color was the "GTS only" Yellow Gold and it had the "DeTomaso" script on the side of the car. I'm pretty sure it was new when he bought it but it might have been slightly used. He really loved the car and drove it daily; rain or shine. He'd owned a number of Ferraris but got tired of the service headaches, thus the Pantera. He ran into financial difficulties and it was taken by his bank. The second owner was a car enthusiast who enjoyed the car and looked after it for a few years.

The third owner of the car spent every penny he had to buy the car and couldn't afford insurance after buying it (or so he told me). He said he went to the bar one night with his friends, had a few too many, and couldn't resist taking his new, uninsured Pantera out for a drive. He slid through a stop sign and a big truck ran over the nose of the car. It's possible the car was insured and his insurance company refused to "pay-out" because he was drunk when the accident occurred. As far as the car is concerned, it doesn't really matter why it wasn't repaired after the accident. I'm sure his bank wasn't too happy.

The next owner (number four) bought the car with the idea of restoring it. He bought a used front "clip" from a vendor, that he intended to graft onto the front of the car; however, I believe there were extensive rust issues that made the whole project financially impractical, so he sold it.

Owner number five was a mechanic who worked at a garage about ten blocks from my house. I only met him once. It was obvious he knew nothing about the car but thought he could fix it up and sell it. I guess he was wrong. That was about two years ago. I guess owner number six is the one selling it on eBay.

Insurance covers, insures, the car not the driver. The driver sets the rates with his driving record.

If your car is stolen, your insurance covers the damage done while stolen.

Needless to say, this is a tough car to do. You need a lot of space and it has to go on a jig to keep it straight.

Missing the ZF is a killer. I would say it is worth less then it is at now, because of the labor to put it together.

Reality is it is worth more cut up in parts.
If I am reading the serial number correctly, this appears to be an original US GTS?

All I was saying is that basically this car is somewhere in the 70 to 100k range to put it back together.

What is the market value for it? 50?

This would be a labor of love for sure?

As far as the car not being covered if used in a crime, that is a very discomforting thought. Lots of potential victims that would go without any remuneration just for being an innocent bystander.

That would never cut it in the US. That is one of the things auto insurance is for here.
Doug, innocent bystanders are covered. The insurance company would pay them out, then go after the drunk driver for the damages. In this case, if there was damage to the truck that ran over the GTS, the insurance company would have held the truck driver faultless, paid him out or paid to fix his truck, then gone after the GTS driver to recover the amount paid to the truck driver. It's called being held accountable ($) for your actions.

Are you saying, in the USA, if a drunk driver wraps his Bugatti Veyron around a telephone pole, the insurance company gives him a hearty handshake, then writes a huge cheque to repair the car?
Well first off, the drunk would need to be convicted. Second whether or not the insurance pays for it is a matter of contract law with terms and limitations. I'd have to read the fine print.

Definitely if the car is stolen, even by a drunk, the car is insured PERIOD, to whatever the terms of the contract are. There are dollar limits on the policy, set by the purchaser and there is a new clause included on all policies in NY that is called "under insured motorist".

Motorcycles can't get personal injury coverage as far as I understand it but to be honest with you, I never asked my insurance agent if I am covered if I am drunk? If I get a chance, I'll ask.

I would tend to think that you are covered under any conditions since people with one DWI conviction pay something like a minimum of $10,000, and the limits of coverage are reduced because they become an assigned risk. Two DWI's presuming you still have some kind of a license, you would be uninsurable.
It's a car in a tough situation. It is actually worth more in parts then like this.

To put it all together well in my view is well over 50k (way over)It's missing parts (transaxle)and nothing adds up at all.

There was a "goose" that was more complete and in better shape that went for $3500 a couple of years ago.

The issue here simply stated is how much will be into the car to complete it? Will it have a market value of what it cost? I personally don't think so at all? It will be a huge loss to fix it, unfortunately.

Someone will get sucked into thinking they can do it, then find out it is a major loss.

The entire situation makes me very sad.
The seller took the car down from ebay. There is a car in garden grove that been on and off craigslist for the better part of last year for 16k with trans and look to be in much better condition. i i doubt he sold the car. probably going to part it out as it was mentioned in this thread. it's not like the mangusta we saw a few months back that finally went to europe for over 40k that was a major project. unfortunately pantera is a dime and dozen. he will never get what he want for it. at lease not 18 large.

There was a better Mangusta that was missing glass but otherwise pretty complete, that was an insurance total out about 2 years ago here.
As I recall it got sold for $3,500.
I believe it had fire damage but looked like electrical.
The Mangusta that went to Europe is understandable.
The Euro vs. Dollar is making those deals extra sweet at the moment.
The weak dollar only helps US manufacturers looking to increase their markets through export.
It doesn't help us individuals since we are in a weaker position from finding deals overseas.
That's just the way it is and has really been going on since the '80s.
First the cars were going to Japan. Still to Australia, more now to Euro countries.
Extra seweet - I dunno...

Shipping costs and especilly import taxes really cut in. Parts are way better available in the US, and lots cheaper. Engine (related) parts are readily available about everywhere, whereas the few shops around here who do have some US stuff on the shelf, are not particularly cheap.

Taxes on my carb kit for instance - 967 Euro, currently $1265!

Actually the Euro is near a 3 year low against the dollar, little problem with the european debt crisis. That combined with gas being near record highs in places like Germany and England, I think this combined with our still week economy, keeping our cars "under valued" and selling for less than they should. Good if your are looking to buy a project that might have a completion date of 2015, my best guess
