So I was reading in a restoration magazine that one should not use a metal etch primer on vehicles pre-1980...

No real technical reason was given other then HSLA steels were used post-1980. The author did not list any background creds so I am not sure if he is in the paint industry or what. I will ask my local paint shop the next time I go in.

His recommendation was an expozy primer over the bare steeel after it had been sanded with 180 grit.

Thoughts?

I have done cars both ways etch primer based cars and epoxy based cars.Never had an issue with either one,but if you use epoxy do not apply etch primer only epoxy.Advantages of etch primer is that you can use body fillers on top with good adhesion.Etch primers have been used for decades including vinyl wash which was also considered an etch primer. The only time you have to be careful is when you are dealing with galvanized metals.
