We are resurecting a Pre-L car that's been mostly sitting for 20 years or so. About 8 years ago the last onwer had installed a big radiator and got it running briefly only to let it set until my purchase recently.

There is a small hose fitting(nipple) coming off of what I believe is the return pipe(cold side) from the radiator. It is capped. Can anyone tell me where this is supposed to go? We are trying to get this car to cool.

That nipple connects to a nipple on the top corner of the radiator tank. I believe it's to remove trapped air. My original radiator has this fitting, but my replacement radiator does not. So the nipple on my coolant tube is capped too.

If this isn't clear, I can take a picture of the original tonight - yes, I still have the original radiator taking up space in the garage. My wife accuses me of being a pack rat for some reason.

Ciao!

On early cars a hose connected this fitting to a nipple in one of the radiator tubes up front. Later cars ran a line from this fitting on the radiator to the swirl tank in the rear. The idea was automatic air purge. It didnt really work. Just leave it plugged off but make sure one side of the radiator has a little valve to vent air from the top of the radiator as you fill the coolant.
