Hi Tony,

I replaced my calipers with the ZR-34 monoblock calipers from performance friction. They perform really good. I drove my pantera at the Spa high speed track in Belium and had no problems at all.
To get a good deal, I did order them in australia, but they are made in America. Somehow ordering them in Australia is still cheaper. Ask for Mike.

Tony,

I assume you are replacing the rotors as well?

IMO much depends on your intended use of the car, street, track etc. I have Wilwoods on the street car and Sierra Racing calipers on the track car.

Wilwoods are readily available and pretty cheap, although there are other options like getting a set of used Porsche/Brembo brakes from a junk yard, which maybe an easier option in Europe.

Julian
Wilwood, is OK, but you have to go for the higher quality series of wilwood to get acceptable lasting stopping power. Everybody who takes the effort in restoring a Pantere will take his car to the tracks someday. If You put an LS3 in your Pantera Smiler the beautifull delta wing will never save your live, your brakes do ! ( and a good fire extinguisher )
People often say that their brakes were just bold on and ready to go. In reality that is almost impossible with hubs from 1972 and it is an importand job to get them aligned the right way.
Here in Europe Wilwood is still expencive. They are the better aftermarket brakes, but they are comming realy short of the top end brakes like brembo or AP. The reason that I mentioned Performance Friction, is that they have put a realy good Calliper on the market for an reasonal price. I paid for an set complete with mounting brackets and pad's approx. 2400$. ( no discks, drilled discks are not allowd in my class. Stupid )
Most people who restore a car are not willing to invest a lot of money in things you don't see. But everbody who did can tell you that you have to take care not doing thing twice. Brakes and shocks are typical.
hi guys thanks for your suggestions ,i will do some checking around and decide which option i can afford to go for ,i have a set of vented rear rotors i think they are gt5 but thet have the same offset as std solid rotors ,what model porsche do these calipers come from and are they a simple fit or do you need adapters also which wilwood calipers are best for a pantera cheers tony
Tony,

My friend has the Hi-spec rear hand brake caliper. It works well as a brake caliper and OK as a hand brake. You would not be able to leave the car on a hill using only the hand brake, but only a fool would do that anyway!
I like the weight saving it offers and have yet to see anything similar from any other manufacture.

I thought there were only two Panteras in Ireland. Are you a third?

Johnny
Tony, with the scarcity of Panteras in your area to compare, be aware that most early (pre-'80) Panteras had 0.810-inch thick solid rotors. The exceptions were the rare Gr-3 and Gr-4 racecars that had thicker 1.25-inch thick vented rotors. So calipers made for one rotor thickness will not always fit the other, even with spacers as shown between the caliper halves on the SVA website. Some spacers can be added or removed, but its an individual thing from each mfgr.
Stock Girling iron 3-piston calipers used on post-'80s Panteras are monobloc types that are not split, so no spacers can be added or removed; on these rear calipers, the cable operated handbrake caliper was a 'pair-of-pliers' type also used on some Rolls-Royces. This is quite different from the sliding 1-piston Girling rear caliper- stock for your year of machine, with a handbrake that was integral to the caliper and cannot accept a spacer for wider rotors.
Finally, it's possible to add a separate cable operated Wilwood handbrake caliper to each rear rotor, with its bracket. At least one U.S Pantera vendor sells such a system for completely stock Pantera cables, or if you have fabrication capabilities, you can make your own bracket. I did this some 15 years ago and its worked well; it will pass your MOT.
Bottom line: adapting calipers, rotors and handbrakes is not a trivial exercise, so stay tuned to this Forum when you decide what you want to do with your car. We can tell you what fits (usually) and what doesn't except at huge trouble & expense.

On the contrary, I belive you will struggle to get a car through MOT with spot calipers as a handbrake. I assume the test still includes locking up the rolling road with the handbrake?

FWIW the Ultima switched away from spot calipers and to a more substantial Brembo handrake caliper.

Arno,

Does your set-up still fit 15" wheels, and if so, what kind/brand of disks & rotors are you using?

Hi Kid,

I just put a 15" wheel on, and they will fit. I use 30 cm / 32mm front disc's and 30 cm / 24mm in the rear. ( he is belgium you see )
I don't know where the hub's are comming from, but the disc mounted direct on the hub. PF offers custom hubs in every size, But also rotors and disc's you can put on your normal hub's.
I used their pad's designated for endurance racing, and it worked really well.

Thanks for the info Arno Cool

I'll drop those folks an e-mail, and see what they can offer, at what cost, and compare it to some of the kits the vendors offer. I was for instance thinking about going for a Wilwood kit offered by Pantera Performance.

As I really have no time to figure out configurations myself - I'm hardly home - and fab adaptors etc, I really need some kind of ready to go kit...
