Hi all,

A few questions:

My right angle speedo drive has broken in my 74. How do you tell what type it is: VDO or Borletti? Where can I buy either a used one or a new one? What price?

Also the BIG question: The drive gear in the transmission that drives the angle drive is also broken. I know enough to not remove it or it will drop into the case. My question is: Can it be replaced while in the car? Where to buy it? How much?

Apparently the drive seized and broke everything after years of non use.

Any and all tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Is it magnetic whereby you can hold and pull it out with a good strong magnetic pick up tool?

Failing that pull the transaxle and invert it ala GT40 and it will want to come down and out.

Good luck,
Julian
Steve, I've fixed a few broken Veglia angle drives, which nearly all Panteras use. If you're interested. PM me for details. There are no new ones but a couple of vendors have NOS assemblies for $250-350 (may also be good used units). As for the internal drive shaft, no one fixes that but RBT and some vendors have those available new or used.
Julian's idea of a magnet is good, but if the complete broken shaft won't come out after you carefully remove that 10mm bolt, try leaving the magnet in place and instead pull on the threaded end of the steel sleeve; both the sleeve and the shaft should come out. The sleeve is o-ring-sealed so you'll need to use some force up and out on the exposed threaded end.
The danger is, the shaft always breaks at the holding relief cut in the shaft, so the lower end may already have fallen inside the cases.
If so and you feel lucky, try fishing around inside thru the case hole with a telescoping magnet, after the steel sleeve is out. At least one member managed to retrieve a shaft in this manner as with the shaft out, the case hole is considerably larger. Otherwise, the ZF must come out and be disassembled; there's not enough room inside for the shaft to lay there safely, so the car should not be driven until it's removed. Good luck.
Steve,

I went through this ordeal a few months back (you might want to search some posts w/ my name on it, I don't post here often). Anyway this job is obviously time-consuming but is very doable. I was able to extract the broken drive gear w/ the trans in the car but save yourself the trouble and just pull the trans out (b/c my linkage wouldn't go back together properly w/ the trans in the car). Put it in neutral - before disassembly - and pull the back half of the case off (the trans assembly), leave the differential assembly intact. You should be able to extract the gear and bolt everything back together. I had a tough time getting the linkage to stay in place, but with enough patience you can get it all back in place (might have to loosen the shift forks).

It's not as scary as some would lead you to believe. Lloyd is also an expert if you want good advice over the phone.
Hi all,

Many thanks to all who gave me advice on this. I was able to use a 'rare earth' magnet - very strong and very small - to extract the broken speedo drive. As was suggested to me, I put the magnet on top of the broken speedo drive to hold it from falling into the transmission, then screwed on the broken angle drive to use as a lever, and removed the bolt that held everything in place from dropping it all into the transmission. I pulled the whole unit out with the housing that the angle drive screwed to - very carefully (it felt like I was doing an operation) - I even turned the sterio off and had no distractions, and everything was out and the new parts installed in actually less than 3 mins. I am told that I was lucky.......... Many thanks to Lloyd at RBT for good advice and a used speedo drive and also to Jack (Bosswrench) for supplying me with a repaired angle drive. What a great Forum to belong to and a lot of very helpful people!! I just wish that everything Pantera repair related went so well. Now onto another issue that I will post in the electrical area.

Thanks again,
Steve
