Rick,Just had the speeo& tach out myself.Start with the speedo, undo the cable first. It's explained in the owners manual,if you have one.At first it seems difficult, but take your time.It helps to be double or triple jointed. But you need to take the speedo first to get to the tach. After the speedo cable you need to take the two screws out that hold the speedo in place and slide the speedo forward where you can get to the remaining wires.Be sure to mark wire locations.
Here's a link to the page. The text describing the process is missing, but the pictures show some of what they did to improve guage lighting:

In an nutshell, they added two additional lights to the tack and speedometer, and now the dash rheostat actually serves a purpose. This project is on my list of upgrades to do when I run out of other projects.

Cheers!

Rick, some cars came equiped with a reostat to dim or brighten the lights. Have you looked to see if it is just turned down?

Thanks DT.I could't get my gauge lights to work at all.Figured it was something simple. All gauges would not illuminate at night. So thats what that black knob is for!Now they are working.BTW,they are not all that bright. But, now I can see them. Thanks JW
