Has anyone had experience with wheel adapters to move rear stock wheels outward on a stock body car? It seems like it would make 8" Campy wheels look like 10" wheels, at least from most angles. The wheel well would be more filled in. Here is one of the units that could work. I am thinking of the 1" width offering.

Wheel Adapter 5 Lug 4.5" To 5 Lug 4.5" (Pair) 12x1.5

I used 1" adapters I bought at a local swap meet to fit a Mustang. They were aluminum with the same bolt pattern and metric studs. They bolted right on and havent given me a problem in the 2,000 miles since completing the restoration. The stock wheels look absolutely lost in the wheelwells without them. I'd really like to buy a set of chromed Campy clones, but simply don't have the cash right now. Does anybody care to contribute to the "Dave needs a new set of wheels fund?"

There's nothing wrong with wheel spacers as long as they're properly designed for the specific car they're being used on. That means, they MUST be hub centric. That means, the hole in the center of the spacer must be the exact same I.D. as the Pantera's hub/register. This ensures the spacer is perfectly centered on the axle and that the impact forces of bumps and potholes are taken by the hub and axle, not the lug bolts. A proper spacer also needs to have a hub for the wheel to then register on. This is the way Porsche has been doing it for years. In fact, Porsche used 2" spacers on the rear of their early wide bodied 911's. I'd call the company you mentioned in your posting and tell them you want a set of fully hub centric spacers for a DeTomaso Pantera. I'm sure they can have a set made for you.

David, you raise a good point. I took the back wheel off my car and can clearly see that the wheel is centered snugly on the ring (register) that protrudes from the hub. A viable adapter has to mimic that design. One of the reasons I started this thread to was get this type of information ahead of time and avoid damage to the wheels, studs, hubs and so forth. I can envision the shearing forces that will occur without the properly fitting rings (hub centric) in place. Thanks.
Steve, I had a look at the web site you mentioned in your previous posting. They do sell billet, hub centric spacers; just not ones specifically for the Pantera. Since they have them, it may be a simple matter to give them your specs and have a set made. You could also buy a pair of hub centric spacers, in the Panteras bolt pattern, with a "smaller than Pantera" center bore. Then, just have a machine shop open up the center bore to the Pantera's hub O.D., then have the same machine shop make a press fit ring, to increase the spacer's outer register O.D. up to the Pantera wheel's center bore diameter. Simple !
Steve, I had a set of adaptors made for my wide body car by Motorsport Tech in Nevada. They are hub centric and are of very high quality. I’ve used them for few years with no issues. Pantera has 5x4.5 Ford bolt pattern and you will need to measure hub O.D. on your car for a precise fit. Off road racers use them all the time and they MUST be hub centric for safety.
