anyone want to tell me how bad this is?
My alternator belt was squealing a couple weeks ago. We put on a new belt and checked the alternator for free rotation and it was smooth and without sound or gritty when turned by hand.
Today, after getting up to temp, I went for a drive, all was quiet until the engine was reved to about 5000rpm and the alt started sounding like a bad bearing.
I drove back to the garage, about a mile, when the belt broke leaving me with battery only and in hindsight no waterpump.
A little water came out when I parked it.
Question how screwed am I running the half mile back without the waterpump. I did not notice the temp, like an idiot.

There's only one seal in a water pump- around the shaft. So if water was (and still is) coming out the shaft hole in the pump nose, you'll need a new pump. If it was coming out the gasket surrounding the pump somewhere, you might be able to simply pull the pump and add a new gasket. Overheating generates steam, expands castings and softens gaskets. All can contribute to a water leak. Some leaks are self-healing when things cool down, but don't trust this- get in there & replace as necessary. Good luck.
UPDATE
replaced the alt, old one was fine at low speed but went bananas with revs above 2000.

new oil/filter

only needed about half tank to top up overflow and expansion tanks

on start up, had instant oil press
ran for 25 - 30 minutes in the garage at idle and revs, temp stayed at 170-180.

Me thinks all is well.
