dashboard switches decals

I wasn't aware there ever were decals or labels for the switches.... which leads some owners to forget what the functions of each switch are. Maybe some stick-on labels wouldn't be a bad thing?

In fact they are stick-on labels. Black print over Metalic. I was told that Lamborghinis of the same era have similar switches and stick-on decals. If somebody has all the orginal may be we could get some high resolution scans. I could take care of the printing on the proper material? Anybody could provide the scans of the originals?

I have original NOS switches, and my car came with some repro stickers that arent very good.

I have no idea where they came from. The one I need is the Red hazard switch label.

I will search around.

PS I found a great deal on many parts, including the dasboard mouse fur from a european Ferrari source I have been buying from for many years. I will ask them.

The hazard light lenses remove separate from the switches (that's how you access the light bulb inside to change it), and some Alfa e-switches are interchangeable.

Thanks Zadra, another good topic, I'd like to figure something out on this as well. Bobileff Motorcars sells stickers in sets of 5 for Lambo 350GT and 400GTs, but the picture on thier 'parts' web page so small/dark so it's hard to tell what the symbols are exactly, at least besides the 'fan' one. The same basic switches were on several period Maseratis, using some additional/different symbols compared to the Lambos, so Maserati vendors like MIE might have options too. Alfa Giulias (maybe others too) had the same basic switch as well. I say 'basic' switch because it appears there were a large number of part numbers used on these Lucas switches - lots of variables involved regrding throws, contacts, load capacity, etc, apparently.

I haven't found other cars that have the exact part numbers as the Goose but that's a separate issue. My impression is that not all Mangusta had the exact same set of symbols, and it's likely that switches/part numbers varied too. I'll post what I know regarding later cars separately, and see what everyone thinks.

Back to stickers, a custom set may be the way to go. While I don't have access to my car I do have a few spare switches at hand and will check if any have any sticker remnants to document, etc.

I want to say that I had heard of someone in the Alfa club redoing some of these stickers years back when I first got my car, but subsequent attempts to locate this person fell short...

I have all of my switch decals intact except for the town/country horn, and the emergency flasher.

Jack-these "Emergency" switches were not lit like you are thinking until P-cars.

Some cars apparently came with "fuel pump" logos on switches yet there were few or no cars that actually came with electric pumps. That would have been "expensive" for DeT.... Makes me wonder what they did do???? T/C horn?

If anyone has an Alfa parts dealer around, it may be worth swinging by with a picture or two to see what they say.

Maserati angle would be good too.

The switch stickers on my car are in pretty good shape, but I will be making replacement ones when I re-do my car. Seems like there are a few here who could use them, so when I get done re-creating the art for reproduction, I'll post and see who will be interested. I'm planning on making other plates and stickers as well, so as long as nobody is in an insane rush, I light be able to pull together complete replacement sets for most of what was on the car. Since we now have three Mangustas in close proximity, we have a growing set of references up here. Long winters mean we have nothing else to do but this sort of thing anyway.

But, if you're in a rush, I'm pretty sure the Maserati Mexico uses the exact same switches.

I just recently found some waterslide decal paper that you can put in a standard injet printer and and create decals that way. I made decals for my father for his hobby of model airplanes. They work just like the decals that you would get for model cars and planes at your local hobby store. in this case I think you would want to use a white decal background with the black surround. I draw mine on an autocad drafting program that has a range of close to 250 colors so you can customize them to fit your car. My dad reported that the decals worked quite well and looked great. It would also let light thru for the lit hazard switch Bosswrench described. I found the decal paper on Ebay for $10.00 for 10 sheets. Thats probably enough to do every 'Goose in existence!

The Mangusta switch end stickers are printed on rigid metallic foil which helps hide the fact that the switch ends have holes in them. In this case, the slide decals wouldln't work, but I am sure I will find other cases where that would be a great time-saver. Thanks!

I was thinking that the decals could be set onto chrome vinyl. This would work especially well if somebody made a die for cutting out the shape.

The vinyl can also be laser cut.

There is a die somewhere on the planet, I have some stickers which may be originals or repros, I have no idea.

I also have several NOS switches that do NOT have stickers. One of them is a "horn" logo, and the Mangusta is the only Italian car I know of that has a town n country horn with a toggle switch.

I can take better pics if I use a tripod, which would help anyone who wants to CAD them. The "for sure" original switches that are on the dash do not look like either of these, they are not as exaggeratedly embosssed.

I'd bet that the pieces in your previous post are all Alfa or Masserati pieces. I've not noticed embossed bits in the Goose.

I just looked at mine and they are flat...foil or thin aluminum discs, silk screened?

When I was at the Factory, I came upon a bunch of switches. Sadly there were about 40 but they were all dimmer and Fan switches. I was looking for a horn switch.

If anyone needs a replacement fan or dimmer let me know.

Hi Jay,

You and I are referring to the same product, just using different terminology. Cutting them with the slight notch (as per originals) shouldn't be an issue.

Those stickers look pretty good, but differ slightly from the ones on my car and I think they are repros. They have a slight embossed appearance as well which mine lack.

My T&C horn icon is similar to the one on your loose stickers not the photo you posted. Also, I don't seem to have the BBQ/fire pit option on my car, so I am missing your top right sticker.

Make sure that your new switches are not a "SPDT" single (or double) pole double throw switch! If they are, they could be used for the T/C switches very easily! I seem to remember seeing multiples of the same switch, just wired differently when I last peeked behind my dash. Seemed like the dimmer and the emergency flashers may have been the only oddballs....

It seems that the earlier cars that I have seen use the 4 bladed fan picture on two switches, but later cars use one of the 4 bladed fan picture on one switch and one "bbq/fire pit" picture on the other switch (I guess to avoid confusion between the two)- can anybody confirm this?

I'm not sure how you want to deferentiate "early" and "late", but my car (8Ma1114) has many "late" features including the late dash design, but my car has two of the 4-blade fan switches and is, sadly, not equipped with the rare BBQ option.

Well, I'm really confused then!

Only cars with the rare bbq option used that decal ? It does seem like it should be on the cooling fan switch, where I have seen it on at least one car...??

I have two of the "fan" switches that run radiator fans and cabin heater fan.

I see that in Jay's original pictures that the BBQ pit was a lot different than the interior lamp switch logo! I had that mixed up for a bit but rechecked...

Tiny light bulb is on the gauge illumination/brightness switch.

I have 7 switches in all... are there cars with less switches?? I didn't get a gas pump switch!

I think the "BBQ pit" for the interior heater/defroster switch could be an acceptable substitute for one of the 4 blade fan versions, as long as it was flat and not embossed.

I've never yet noticed the embossed style on any cars...

What the notch appears to do, is provide orientation for the logo. Notch= down. (6:00 position) That would be my observation.

On my car the icon notches are all at 3:00 (right side of switch).

I had assumed that the BBQ icon was for the rear-window defroster-equipped cars, but since Denis' car has that rare option but doesn't have that icon, I am stumped. Denis: what is the icon/switch type on your rear defogger?

Also, my car has seven dash toggle switches:
Main headlights, interior light, high beams, fan, air horns, fan, hazard lights. Not being in the car now, I'm not sure which fan is interior and which is rad fans.

High beams???? Isn't that a function of your turn signal switch? Move the stalk forward for high beams?????

You should (perhaps....) have a switch to dim the guages, and one for the interior lamp? Which one don't you have?

Oh, and my switches are oriented to work up and down. I have seen some switches twisted to be sort of side to side when operated. I don't think that is intended....

OK, I'm an idiot... yeah, you're right about the high beams. Keep in mind that I've never even see electricity go through any of them yet...

BUT, on the later cars the switches are rotated to flip left-right not up and down as on the early cars. Can we call this one a draw?

I think I have seen that (switches sideways) more on cars from the 1000 range upwards....but I'd need to go thru my pictures and see if I could determine any sort of pattern.....

My seven swithces are headlight, dash brightness, rad fan, interior light, fan, horn, and hazard. The notches are on the right, the switches move left-right, car is numbered over 1200.
So, the consensus is that both fans use the same fan decal?

I hadn't thought about the bbq decal being for the defroster, but that would make sense. Has anyone actually seen one there? My defroster button has no decal or marking whatsoever, so maybe it should have the bbq decal

On a related note, it does seem that the defroster option is rare/scarce. Anyone have an educated guess of how many cars were so equipped? 20 maybe?

Switches work from R to L on 8MA1244. Their location/function are as ID'd as above. The rear defroster on mine is activated by the green button on left, FWIW, my ignition key is on the steering column.

My Mangusta is Euro as well. The defroster button is orange.

I'd love to see a good shot of your steering column with the ignition switch in it! If the switch is exposed at any time, take a shot of it please!

Your car was built about 28th from the end of scheduled production, and the last 10 cars were RH drive. Also, according to Wellis, many of the latter cars were also completed elsewhere and not at the DeT plant of the day.

It will be interesting to know what variant of Fiat-Capri switch may have been used!!!

vyprgt2- it is sounding like both fans use the same symbol at this point! ...unless something was changed towards the very end!

I know that not many cars got the defroster type rear glass!!!

Update:

I never recieved a reply from Bobileff about the stickers (calls and emails), but I have discovered they are available from MIE Maserati parts (maseratinet.com).

As near as I have been able to find out, this flat-face style switch was used only on early Maseratis. My pics and phone calls to Fiat suppliers were answered with blank stares, they did not recognize them.

Yes, because you should be adding a better headlight relay anyways.

...and a cooling fan relay...

Regarding the last response about using a fan switch for a headlight switch....

The more correct answer would be NO, you can NOT use a fan switch for a headlamp switch......unless you only want either the marker lamps OR the headlamps to come on at one time.....

The Fan switch is single function (two position) and the Headlamp is double function (three position). Flip your switches and you will see what I mean. First position is for parking lamps, second position is headlamps.

Yes, you should consider a relay for the headlamps at this time.

Somewhere on this site I posted modern Lucas switches that can be used to "rebuild" your original switch. You will not find the originals easily.....due to the round knob. The replacements have flat knobs.

What you can do, and I have done this with a couple of fan switches....before I stopped being dumb...and installed a relay....is swap the lever from your old switch into the new switch body.

Do this in an area where sproingy small things can be recovered easily..... there are some parts in these switches that have a bad habit of trying to escape into the far reaches of your garage floor.......so beware.

I found an old Lucas three position switch with this number on it #34514B... but there is another number that is now used #31788.

You can find the latter number all over on ebay....repop, originals, copies.... about $15-25.

The switches come apart easily...take pictures and document your parts chase...I mean success!

On something slightly different, my rheostat (dimmer) switch for the dash lights looks totally different than the one posted earlier!

My dash gauges are barely visible at night and I have already replaced the bulbs with slightly higher wattage pieces.... but little help.

My next thing to try was just to bypass the switch and see what happens!

Mangusta is right. I forgot about the extra notch for the parking lights.

Try Wilkinson for the switch decals. I believe he has most with the fan switches being the 4 bladed type of decal. They all have the little orientation notch cutout.
