Ok, I admit it, I'm a boob.

While changing a faulty boot on the coil wire, I knocked 3 plug wires loose
from the cap. I thought I knew right where they went, but when I went to start
it I got a backfire. So I go back to switch the wires back around
but...........uh..........I failed to note which 3 they were!

So I figure it's best I start at ground zero, I bust out my many manuals which
show wire placement for the 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order but do to the amount of
advance my distributor may have, it's tough to tell the orientation of the #5
and #6 cap positions.

So, looking at the cap through the drivers side quarter window, which wire
goes on the drivers side of the caps forward retaining clip, #5 or #6?

And yes, I'm Polish, Ron

Nope, the #1 orientation is lost, as mentioned above, this is a ground zero restart. SO does anyone know the asnwer to the above question: "So, looking at the cap through the drivers side quarter window, which wire
goes on the drivers side of the caps forward retaining clip, #5 or #6?"

All help is appreciated, Ron
Do you have the front cover off?

The easiest way is to turn the crank to set the HB at the TDC marker, that is TDC on #1, take the cap off the rotor will be pointing to the #1 positiion, align the cap and work the rest out from the firing order. As Ron says, working around in a counter-clockwise fashion.

Bob,
Do not sweat your mistake. I did it myself not long ago when installing my new manifold and carb.
The diagram in the factory shop manual is wrong. The firing order is :

1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

If you are looking at the original dizzy from the back the hold down clip at 7:00 o'clock
is #1. #3 is at 6:00 etc. going counter clockwise.
Hope this helps.
