I just had the remote emergency brake kit installed on my 72, and it looks great....unfortnately the teeth on the ratchet mechanism of the brake lever won't grab and hold from the driver's seat, but will grab and hold when pulled up from the passenger side. Therefore it appears the teeth are worn on the driver's side. Any advice on how to fix or find a substitute lever that will work? Thanks.

Dennis,

I am not familiar with a 'remote emergency brake kit', but I would guess there is some play in the brake handle so that when you pull it from the drivers side where there is a tendency to pull at an angle due to the extended reach it is not engaging the teeth with the ratcheting mechanism. The OEM handle only has a single set of teeth and my remedy although crude would be to remove it and take a hammer and adjust it by closing the two sides up around the toothed center section. Difficult to explain but once you get it off and see it should become fairly self explanatory, that is unless this is some afternmarket kit, then a call to the vendor who sold it would be in order.
I had the same problem with my '71. Because you have to reach across and pull up the lever it becomes subtly bent, then the teeth do not hold. The lever is not made of the strongest metal. When the lever bends it spreads the part of the lever that surrounds the teeth. I took my lever off, straightened it, then welded a small strip of metal to each side of the base of the lever where it was bending. Problem solved and all repairs are covered by the rubber boot. Good luck!
