Good Afternoon,

I'm trying to get details finished so I can eventually fire up the new engine.  I purchased a new fuel sending unit from Hall and noticed it has the fuel pickup line integrated.  My old system just had the sending unit and a separate fitting to feed to the fuel pump.  I included before and after pics.

I assume the new sending unit fitting should be connected to the fuel pump with an inline filter.  Does the old fitting get clamped off or should it be vented? I'm planning to use the original charcoal filter to vent the fuel tank, where it works or not is another story.

Thank You,

John

Yes, connect your fuel line to the fitting on the new sender.

The problem with the original design is the tube that ran to the bottom of the tank tended to rust from condensation, meaning when the fuel level fell below the rust hole the pump was sucking air, not gasoline.

I would just cap off the old fuel fitting.

I guarantee the charcoal canister is non-functional at this time.

you can do as I and others have done and just connect a fuel-rated rubber hose to the OEM vent and run it down along the side of the gas tank to exit at the bottom

Agree with Larry. That top fitting was for '71-'72 tanks while '73-up did not have that fitting. The late sender is one of the few drop-in parts for a Pantera. You may need to carefully bend the long sender arm a tiny bit to calibrate it to your gauge. Most guys cap the tank fitting or use it as a fuel return for EFI conversions. For that it doesn't matter if it leaks internally.

As for the 50-yr-old non-serviceable charcoal cannister, you can buy a replacement or hook its line to your air cleaner if you need to pass emissions in your area.
