I have a difficult time filling my gas tank on my 74. It can take 5 minutes because the spout keeps shutting off. When I do fill it to the top, gas leaks out by the bottom of the car by the rocker. I don't think the tank leaks, I think some vent or something is fouled. I just bought the car last month and it sat for a long time. Thanks every one for any help.

If you have the later, 73-74 outside filler tube; there is an overflow/spill tube/hose that directs the overflow down behind the fender and dumps it on the street below the rocker, as you discribed. Look in the "Pocket" around the actual filler cap, there should be a small hole in the bottom corner about 1/4" Dia.. They are most often clogged, and can be unclogged with a piece of straight wire. To fill my Panther, I turn the nozzle completely up-side-down, to keep it from shutting off. That's right! Hose pointed up in the air. Try it yourself!!Marlin. One more word about that overflow tube! The only way to get to it is remove the left/rear wheel, and the splash guard!! Why would you want to get to it?? Because you will find that it is too short and dumps any spilled gas into the interior of the fender and chassis, plus it's rotten by this time. When I replaced it,(I believe it was 3/8" I.D.) I made sure the end hung down below the rocker 2 inches.

Gassing up a Pantera has been a problem ever since the advent of the dual-hose nozzles for smog reasons. The same thing happens in my Pantera (and my motorcycle, too) and the upside-down pump nozzle fixes most gas pumps. Try not to run the pump wide open- it has to do with the angle of the inlet in Panteras not accepting gas as fast as some pumps can deliver it, I believe. Vendors used to sell a short extension tube that fit into a Pantera tank inlet and extended away from the body. On early cars, its worse- the spit-up lands in your trunk....
When I bought my 74 back in 1985 I went to the gas station to fill up and I was alerted by a woman at the pump behind me that I was practically standing in a huge puddle of gas!! Turns out the short hose that connects the outside fill tube to the tube bolted on top of the tank had a split in it. I pushed the car away from the puddle before I started it and changed the hose right away.

Filling the tank with the hose upside down and about half volume also helps.
