Lubricating Universal Joints

Doug, when I bought my Pantera you could hardly shift it. The problem was in the trunion bearing not the u joints. Try lubing the shaft where it passes through the trunion bearing.

I needed to adjust the linkage and am looking at the entire system.

I installed one of those billet aluminum trunions with the teflon bushing in it.
It could be slicker but since I needed to disassemble the universal joint from the ZF input shaft, I noticed how stiff the universal joint bearings are.

They are stiff.

They don't appear to be disassemblable and they have metal plugs over them like the ball joints do.

I was wondering if anyone had put zerk fittings in thiers or if it is even doable.
Otherwise it's going to be a needle fitting on the grease gun to get into them, and that ain't going to be easy.

Try soaking them in WD40 or a light oil and work them free.

Richard they are free, they just aren't as "fluid" as they should be.
They probably need to be greased. The original grease is now about 35 years old. I think it is time.

I certainly will use synthetic grease. Too bad the factory didn't.

I periodically lubricate them with a normal oil can (engine oil), then work them back and forth a bit. If you figure out a way to grease them, let me know. Don't forget the ones in the steering column.

The steering column is fine. I guess I steer a lot more then I shift?

I've been doing just that Johnny. I'm not sure why they are so stiff. Maybe the oil is frozen?

I don't think they can be greased but it makes sense that they areneedle bearings with grease packing when assembled.
