I have a chance to get a newly rebuild 5,0 Mustang 1979 engine. The engine is full of good racing stuff and i can get it very cheap. I need a new engine for my 1972 Pantera, but is this a possible swap?
I mean that i in a previus PI magazine have seen someone do this swap, but is it a good idea?
Thanks for Your help.

Hi Mark, what i want is performance and higher RPM. My more or less standard 351C stops around 5500, and i want an engine that can rew to app. 7000, then as i see it this is the only economic realistic way to have the max. speed that i want. I live in Denmark and the V8 engines, and parts for these, are hard and expensive to get here. I can rebuild my 351C and add a restrictor kit, Manley valves and rockers, Carillo rods, another cam, steel crank shaft, 10 liter oil pan, etc. but i am not sure if i will end up with a realiable engine that can rew to 7000 rpm. This is the reason why i thought that the newer Mustang engine could be a good swap. But again, my knowledge of these engines is very little so any help and comments are higly apreciated.
The 5.0 l engine bolts into your Pantera. But you'll likely have problems getting 5.0 headers to fit around the rear springs, and your 351C headers won't fit the small block heads. You'll also have trouble mounting the A/C compressor bracket. Most of the swaps I'm familiar with were for small-capacity racing so such things weren't a concern. On the good side, the engine is physically smaller & lighter than the 351C, so once its in & hooked up, you can replace the firewall bulge with an essentially flat engine access cover for more passenger comfort. But beware- torque is addictive and is not replaced by high-rpm horsepower for most. You'll miss the grunt of the larger engine. Before doing this, see if you can get a drive in a 308 Ferrari; a 5 l Pantera will be very similar IMHO.
I like the 5.0 swap...Like Jack said, lighter, smaller motor. Also I think that future mods would be cheaper and easier to do.If displacement is a concern you could stroke the motor to a 347-355.
Or there is the 351W swap...Still lighter than 351C and still smaller...also with the option of stroking.
Good Luck and let us know what you do...
