Thanks, I am asking as a painter suggested the area be painted flat black, which didn't sound right to me.
To be factory spec, is it to be a fairly "rough" application of paint, or smooth and perfect?

There is no access for painting to that area other than through the open of areas the grate above it, is there? (without carving up the car to create access)
I imagine that when the car was built all the metal in there was clean and paint just was sprayed in. It would be rough, unfinished and not polished.

Do not forget, as most people do, flat black out the pinch weld that holds the underbody to the quarter panels and rocker panel, it runs from front to rear wheel. Also the pinch weld around the front grill that the grill sits on and the grill screws go into , same with the rear end panel that the tail lamps fit onto.
The inner wheelhouses, front and rear are also flat black.

Dick,

This may become evident to me when I remove my dash, but is there any way to access that area without cutting metal? Mine is a filled with crud and overspray and it's not like on a Pantera where you can just pop out the grilles. I'd like to clean it up properly.

Thanks,
Mark
It would have been great seeing these cars new at the showroom, and looking for these details! My guess is the air intake area was never that nicely finished - the pic is from my cars several years ago, showing the area in question, without the body section covering it. There should be a sheetmetal 'cap' over the heater intake tube to prevent water from going into the heater (this cap part was rusty on 1010 and replaced after the photo was taken). Anyway I would be surprised if Ghia painted this cavity body color prior to the front clip being welded on over this area (spot welds all around) and it must have been impossible to prevent overspray when the body was painted. So my GUESS is that this area never looked that great. Luckily the vent openings are thin so that obstructs the view to this inaccessible cavity areaSmiler

Euro Panteras and Euro Ferrari of the period had predominantly silver Wipers and US cars had black wipers.

That being said there are Mangusta with black-out wiper and other with silver wipers. Build sheets (at least mine (8MA1244) do not specify how they left the factory)

Laurent (8MA1266) and DickR (8MA670) have black wipers and blacked-out trim
Hi Mark ,yes I have always something to do on my cars. But on the moment I need one more car, yesterday I almost buy a 1970 Cyclone spoiler 429CJ
