i just got this pantera last week, and i have an audio clip of the engine revving. methinks it's a possible lifter (driver's side). i was thinking the other option might be a header gasket.

i throw this out to the community for opinions, if only because i'm brand new to this car, and my ear has not diagnosed this stuff in 20 years (since the ol' high school/college days).

any help would be much appreciated. thank you in advance. it's great to finally get my dream car and join ya'll. this (problem) is not a nuisance. it is my hobby.

p.s. history of the engine is balanced/blueprinted, but most of the work looks like it was done 15+ years ago. receipts, although present, don't reflect mileage.

Firstly, a big welcome to the PIBB community and congratulations on obtaining your dream. What serial # '74 do you have?

In all honesty I couldn't tell too much on the audio clip. My Dad (god rest his soul) taught me to hold a large screwdriver on the rocker cover and put your ear to the handle, you'll be able to pick out exactly which lifter it is!

let's see here, serial ends in 06523. oh! i hear the baby monitor going off - time to spring into action (this one's much easier right now to troublshoot than the 'new' baby resting quietly out in the garage).
There is a certain amount of "clack" in a Cleveland valve train. I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary. A collapsed lifter or a leaking exhaust will make a more individual and louder clack than normal.

But you are right in that certain exhaust leaks can sound a lot like valve gear noise.

Throw some fresh oil in the motor and see if the sound changes.

i had it shipped in from PIM over in southern CA, via Horseless Carriage (a good experience all around).

yeah, sure, send me a contact. it'd be great to meet some fellow pantera folk, as i just moved to NoVA from CA, and spend my time as a stay-at-home dad (another dream come true). i know two neighbors and the checker down at Safeway.

Welcome, sounds like some good advice already on the problem, I like to use a length of vaccume hose and pretty much do the same as indicated with screw driver. If you determine it is a "lifter" try adding a quart of LUCAS oil additive. I to had my pantera suffering from a noisy lifter, the additive free'd it up as it was apparently sticking due to former owners not keeping up with the maintenance of the car, I have talked with other Ford owner's about this and some have had a simular experience. Also there are other problems as a result of Oil not having an important additive any longer;

thanks Sick Cat for the oil additive tip if it does turn out to be a lifter. and the URL for reading. appreciate it. i think the car has been well taken care. i also think it's in shock going from warm southern california to freezing DC. poor thing...

and to JohnnyAlki: thank you so much. the universe has provided me a much blessed life this go around. my older daughter turned 3 this past week, and her younger brother is 9 months. my only pains (aside from the obvious) are really centered around barely being able to jack the car up before i have to feed, change, or clean up the kids! i can't get my hands greasy if i try. of course, as we all know, the baby monitor soon finds a new family, and the kids get older, and then my hands get greasy again.

here's to savoring every moment....
