I'm a moderator. I accept I must set a good example, maintain a high standard of conduct, make everyone feel welcome on the DTBB, etc.

So, how do you guys feel about me getting in the middle of a controversial subject? Is that out of line for a moderator?

For instance, I posted the topic about the video of our troups in Iraq. I wasn't making a statement at all, I just wanted to share some touching pictures with those who would find it interesting like I did. But Franz couldn't understand that. Franz is a great deTomaso enthusiast, I respect him tremendously. The last thing I want to do is make him feel uncomfortable or disatisfied with the DTBB.

Should I have avoided the topic of the Iraqi war, since I am a moderator?

In another topic, Gary & Ron have been discussing unions & emerging markets, gosh! I'm a social philosopher, do you know how hard it has been for me to "NOT" throw in my 2 cents?! I've bitten my cyber lip so hard it is bleeding virtual blood.

So what do you guys expect of your moderator?

Tell a good joke, recommend thermostats & otherwise keep my opinions to myself? OR?

take care my friends, have a great weekend, be safe, and don't forget the chat room Sunday evening.

Geezuz George! You're a moderator not a friggen boy scout. Heck this ain't nothin. I am a moderator in a political forum. Phht! What goes on here ain't nothing compared to taht. I mean some stuff gets down right heated there. I have been called every name in the book but I give as good as I get. You didn't get pissed off and ban them did ya?? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just that some opinions are more valuable than others.
I can't imagine someone being so thin skinned that they would begrudge you your right to have and express a viewpoint. Tell you what, if you want to talk politics, come to my Delphi forum and you can spout any old crap you want to. Smiler
George, your too PC, your a moderator, weild your power man, if they dont like it BAN THEM!
Seriuosly, you always seem fair, and don't seem to have a agenda. This is a forum, your here to converse with other enthusiasts, doesn't mean that everybody is going to have your same opinion, or understand your views.
Keep on keeping on.

Moderator needs to have fun. Moderator should control verbal violence, Unnecessary name calling. DAM IT ,,, I like to call people name’s. In the past you have stopped (deleted) these types of things,,, Great job...... Please be yourself or “pass” the control so you can have fun ....
F Red Face Red Face k them if they can’t handle a simple opinion. Opp’s,, you may have to edit that last part Wink Wink Wink
George, anyone who has followed your posts should know that you are a fun, easy-going and VERY helpful guy. I've never seen you intentionally offend anyone here, and I don't think you should feel you need to "moderate" your posts in any way. Keep up the great posts.

GEORGE
Don't don't change for no one!
After all we need a George around here.
Take note of a few facts...
Saint George was a legendary dragon slayer who was supposedly martyred in Palestine.
He is the patron saint of England, Portugal and Catalonia. This name has been borne by
six kings of England, two kings of Greece, and the first
president of the United States, George Washington.
So I dare someone else out there to think of someone better than George Pence to be
a Moderator around here....

This is an international forum. You make a post and it is seen world wide. I am sure there are members that are against the war in Iraq, and members that do not think highly of our president. I think any one would have feeling for the soldier on the ground. Then there are the ones who would like to see all Americans die. george, you are dear to me, and do a fine job. But seeing how this is international, you may just want to leave politics and militay for another forum. I have feeling just like you. But I can't speak for the rest of the world.
People of like interest like talking about things other then the interest. I have never seen a forum that didn't touch on controversial subjects from time to time. If all we talked about were cars we wouldn't be here. I think the fact that these "controversial subjects" didn't blow up is a testament to the people here. People oviously had oposing views but didn't want to step on toes.

My number one problem with forums is when subjects get deleted. I have seen a few forums where discussing anything but cars is prohibited and any thing else deleted. Their argument is it's a "private forum" not subject to free speech. While that is true there suddenly became no reason for me or many interesting and intelectual people to stay. The forum lost validity, remained "private" is without substance.

I understand when 2 people lock horns it gets ugly and has to be stopped.

My solution is to give it a little time, see where it goes. Often with civil adults it works itself out, everone learns something (even if they don't agree) and people move on. When it doesn't happen, and it begins to become ugly, simply say:

Ok, getting ugly topic locked!

But do not delete it. Deleting it rubs everyone the wrong way and is the quickest way to loose truely the best people.

People are not here "just for the cars". If that were true, many of us would not be here at all.

1. Keep the topics on subject and subjects under the right topic.
2. Don't let members get to heated with each other.
3. Keep the BB PG-13 to soft R rating.

If you ever don't want to do the dirty work just let me know. Dave or I will help you out, just like you help us! Keep up the good work..!

Mark, Thanks. I was more interested in what the guys & gals expect. I'm not tiring of being a moderator, I have no problem doing what is necessary to keep the peace around here, or keeping DeTom on topic!

Franz's comment made me wonder if there might be an unwritten standard I'm not tuned into. I don't want a great deTomaso enthusiast like Franz to be unhappy with the DTBB.

I've appreciated the feedback from everyone.

thanks for the comments & support Gary. There is a behind the scenes aspect to the bulletin board that influences our decisions. If a disparaging remark is made about somebody, that person may not appreciate it remaining in public view, and may contact the owner or moderators privately and request that the remarks be deleted. Its a judgement call on the behalf of Dave, Mark or whoever, what happens with the locked post, we hope to have your support in doing what we think is best. If a post goes off topic immediately, there is little sense in keeping it around. If there is significant content before the trouble brews, it may be best to edit out the bad stuff & keep the rest.

No matter what is done, there is always somebody unhappy, and private remarks, and threats, are always made. Its impossible to make everybody happy, and its impossible for the owner & moderators to have perfect judgement, we are, after all, imperfect human beings. The intention is never censorship. That never enters the mind. It's all about keeping the peace.
