Just completed the rear Drivers side Axle replacement, New Axle, Replaced Bearings and Fitted Larger Bearing on the inside, while I was there replaced the lower arm support rod with new sintered bronze bushings, and added grease points. All went well, but while replacing the Inner and Outer universal joints , we found someone had added speedy sleeves to the old universal joints ends to make them fit the housing, I have NEVER seen that Before!! All I can presume is someone purchased the incorrect universal joint and the ends must have been to small, so they went to the time and effort to add a speedy sleeve to each end. Sympathy I feel better that we now have well fitting universal joints.

What you came across was at one time the only reasonably affordable manner to retain the stock driveshafts. Correct factory dimension Ujoints were exceedingly expensive back in the day, so our vendors came up with the sleeve "solution".

Main problem with that solution was the sleeves tend to reach the end of their lifespan and tolerances get lost, bearing caps start wobbling with in the yolks, and yolks often are damaged so that the proper size Ujoints are too loose.

Then you get to buy new yolks, hopefully not in the ZF side of the assembly.

Should you have noticed any of the new bearing caps sliding into position a bit too easily you may want to revisit them to see if you have potential problems due to yoke damage.
