Here is a simple and low cost method to refinish the Pantera shift knob. I bought enough material on eBay for $4 shipped to refinish four knobs. The material is 1.5" shrink tubing and it produces a very nice finish. The tubing shrunk perfectly using a heat gun and I also used an exacto knife to trim the excess material. The refinished knob is on the left and it looked worse than the worn out knob on the right. The shrink tube material is in the middle. You will need remove the old material before applying the new shrink tubing.
I had never thought about heat shrink for that, even though it's not leather it looks very good.
So did you tuck the heat shrink into the upper groove on the knob (around the logo) while it was still soft?
How did you handle the bottom?
Great idea. That’s a lot easier than doing the stitching on leather!
Using a disposable glove, I was able tuck the hot tubing into the holes on both the top and bottom of the knob. The top was easier than the bottom because the opening is larger. The bottom needed a little more trimming with the exacto knife to get the tubing to wrap into the hole.
