Around 30-40 mph my speedo used to jump in time with a tic noise under the dash, which I took to be the drive cable having a hard time spinning through the 180 degree sweep in the footwell.
I pulled out the speedo cable, it was dirty and pretty dry. I cleaned it and flushed out the sheath. I guess it should've been obvious but gosh is that thing long!
What is the preferred lube for the cable and sheath? Transmission lube seems a bit thick. I was going to use a squirt oiler and pump maybe a 20w or 30w synthetic oil into the sheath to lighten the drag and therefore reduce the torque needed to spin the cable (and kill the tic noise).

I undid both ends of my assy. so I could flush out the sheath.
You must pull the cable out the dash end of the sheath. There's a brass ferrule crimped on the cable at that end that prevents it from coming out the ZF end.
I'm going to use a squirt oiler to pump the sheath full of oil, then feed an also oiled up cable back in. I intend to reattach the dash end first, then the ZF end. More room at the ZF end.
From prior experiences with speedo cables I know it can sometimes be difficult to get the squared ends of the cable properly engaged at the speedo and/or trans connection. You might have to twist the cable just a bit to get it lined up right. Be careful, patient and don't force it.
I finally had enough of the bouncing Speedo.
Pulling the cable was easy as stated by larryw from the dash side. The cable was nasty with 30+ year old grease and grime. I placed the cable in a plastic bowl and sprayed it down with carb cleaner. Next used some fine emery cloth and cleaned up some light corrosion and sprayed it down again.

Dried it out with a fresh rag and lubed it with a light coat of NAPA Sil-Glyde. Sil- Glyde is a silcon based paste and among the many stated uses is Speedo cables. Reinstall of the cable was also easy. The Speedo now is bounce free at all speeds. The whole process was less than an hour.
