Hello Everyone:
Have looked thru quite a few posts to get help with this but can't seem to find any solid answer. As most of you know sometimes trying to find out exactly where a leak is coming from can be difficult. I'm pretty sure my zf is leaking at the speedo gear where it is bolted to the tranny or in that vicinity. Assuming this is where its leaking from, does anybody know how I would try to tighten the big nut without removing the tranny from the car. I can't tell if the nut is even loose if I can't get a wrench on it. And yes, I know not to mess with the bolt near the speedo. Have came across very helpful info warning about that one. Also, is there an o-ring or something else that has to do with the speedo gear that would cause a leak in that area?
thks.

A couple of thoughts.

1) consider adding engine oil dye (NAPA part # 765-2661). Drive the car a few miles and check it out with a blacklight. You may be surprised with what you find.

2) If it is the speedo drive area then tightening the big nut is unlikely to help as it is not a sealing pipe thread. Remove the speedo angle drive and put a vice grip plier on the ZF drive's male flange that spins the angle drive gear. Then you can safely remove the side bolt holding in the ZF speedo drive. Use the vice grip to pull the drive gear out of the ZF to have access to the o-ring and replace the o-ring.
Yeah, even though I've been given good instructions on what to do and how to do it I'm still concerned about something bad possibly happening. Guess cause I've never attempted it before and heard so many friggin horror stories. Just gonna have to be very careful and pay attention to what I'm doing. Hope I'm not sounding stupid but the only way to remove the speedo angle drive is to unscrew that very hard to get to big nut, right? Guess pulling the right zf mounting bracket would give me better access. I've tried getting every kind of tool possible in there and there's just no room. Does anyone know a secret?
just get a vernier caliper and mesure it, then get a METRIC Tool, guess it must be 26, 28, 30 or 32 mm (25millimeter = app 1"), This cannot be so difficult in the US..#
Well EXCEPT the engine ALL IS IN METRIC...so you need a set of Tools anyways...Doors, Brakes Gerabox, interior....
smile..had the same issure in the opposite order on my Corvette C2 1967 all in inch..
If you want I measure the Nut size....is blooody cold outside now in old Germany.

To JT's response. Funny, was just thinking about the fact that I would probably have to destroy a perfectly good wrench to make it work. Oh well, so what's new in the world of De Tomaso. If you have to cut a wrench in half to make it work just make sure its not a snap on. Thks guys for all your quick and very helpful comments. This is a great forum. And, no Mat_G, you don't have to measure the nut size but I appreciate the offer. Stay warm my friend...
