ZF Polishing

Looks good Coz. How's your rebuild coming along? Did anything major rear it's ugly head?

No, replacing only the 1st & 2nd gear Synchro's. Should have it done in the next 10 days and back in the car the first week of Sept.

How do you do that polishing?? Do you just use a wire wheel and a dremmel or do you have to buy special stuff???

First used paint stripper and then a wire wheel to take off any paint, my bell housing was completely painted before starting.

Then sanded everything down with 600 grit. Then used a cutting compound for a very fast cutting and pre-buffing. Then buffed it with red compound and then white compound over and over.

Used a combination of buffing cones & wheels that I got from Eastwood, and a very high speed, 22,000 rpm air tool.

Eastwood has everything you need, compound, buffing wheels and cone wise.

I also taped off all the mating surfaces as to not screw with any sealing surfaces all the way through the process.

Not sue yet Mike. Thinking about it. Going to call Eastwood and talk to them about it.

Becasue of the heat, I don't want it turning yellow on me down the road. That would be a real pain in the butt to have to strip and rebuff. Way to much work once back in the car.

Also thinking about just waxing the hell out of it and keeping it waxed.

Will let you know after I talked to Eastwood tomorrow.

Holy cow, doesn't sound like something you should do with the tranny still in the car.

Hey Coz, Looks great. I saw somthing on the cover of Groit's Garage catalog. It is a polish that protects the Al from dulling. Sorry I chunked my magazine, try griotsgarage.com He has some great cleaning and protection products.

Thanks brother, checked them out and really didn't see much in the way of a sealer.
Going to give the Eastwood Diamond Clear Coat a shot and see how it last.

Hey Coz, I dunno about coating the polished ZF. Some folks I talked to before doing mine said I just need to give it a little TLC once a year or so. I did nothing for the first few years, now I occasionally give it a little rub with a soft cloth and it's still pretty nice 6 years later!

I'd worry about coatings messing up after all your hard work.

Yea that's my worry too Deeb. After 40 hours so far and about 10 more to go, the last thing I want to do is have to strip it and buff it out again.
I figure I'm going to try a samll part of it first with the Diamond clear and compare it to the area's I didn't do and see what happens over the next few months.

My concern is yellowing and or cracking of the Diamond Clear.

This sh*t is too much work to have to do it twice.
