So, the banana fired up !! The vacuum line issue was resolved. BUT, we have a NEW issue. The choke is completely stuck. It is not an assembly problem, rather the plunger in the hot air chamber is seized up. Right now it is soaking in some sprayed on rust penetrant. If that is not will to free up, is it fair to assume I will hunting for a carb? The car's owner wants to stay stock so will likely want another Motorcraft carb.

Thoughts?

Carburetor cleaner is a wonderful product for dissolving gum and carbon.

In the good ol' days it was possible to purchase the choke assembly alone, you didn't have to purchase an entire carburetor.

Pony Carburetors is a business that specializes in refurbishing carburetors for classic Mustangs, they may have the part. Just tell them its a 1972 Mustang, not a Pantera.

Another option is to install a Holley choke, hook it to a 12 volt source, and rock n roll.

I have a very special asset one block up the street from me. These guys do AMAZING work and have the awards to prove it. http://r-amotorsports.com/ In a couple of minutes Jeff had the stuck piston free (he was far braver than me, but had "been there done that"). BTW, I have seen the two cars on the splash screen, and they are MORE amazing than the pictures can show. Anyway, I have the piston barrel cleaned up and the piston moves freely. $900 saved.

Pony Carbs closed. The owner died.

In my experience the universal Holley choke thermostat opens too fast. You need a specific choke thermostat or a ramping device to adjust the rate of opening.

I've found that the 84 Mustang GT choke thermostat works well for most intents and purposes. You can get it in Standard and a couple of other brands.

They're about $28.
