Happy monday morning all

I seem to have an electrIcal glitch somewhere.

When I turn on my wipers they flap away merrily at full speed reagrdless of which setting they are on, and then won't turn off. In fact turning of the ignition doesn't help either - I have to lift the lid at the front and use the my battery kill switch to stop them! Smiler

Is this a wiper switch problem, a relay problem or what?

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved.

Cheers
Jim

There is a "parking switch" built into the wiper motor. This is the switch responsible for stopping the wiper blades in the exact same spot each time you turn them off. That parking switch is not opening when it should, it has most likely failed. I don't know if it is repairable, or if you are stuck having to purchase a new motor, as I've never worked on that yet.

In the mean time, if you disconnect the green wire from the wiper motor, or from fuse 8, you'll disable the parking switch. The wipers will still work, you'll just be responsible for "parking" the wipers manually, by turning them off at the moment when the blades are in the lowest position.

You can't blame this on Italian wiring. I've seen this happen before, to other cars of both German and American manufacture. It doesn't happen often however.

(Nice avatar, how does a magzine editor get ahold of the large version of that with permission to publish it?)

I have been involved in some discussion on the e-mail forum with respect to wiper motors and I think it is worth adding a note here on the findings;

1. My old wiper motor is part#75664F Type 14W and has a 95 Degree sweep gear installed.
2. A UK based company S-V-C sells parts for the motors including, park switches and gears with 5 degree increment sweeps from 95 to 130. Their web address is http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/SVCWIPERS.HTM and gears run 15GBP (~$30)
3. For US owners it appears that 95 degree gears may be hard to come by this side of the pond. I have confirmed that the plastic gear is generic to all the sweeps (the controlling factor being the pin location on the metal eccentric). I easily separated the plastic gear from the metal eccentric body. This means that you can potentially source a replacement unit of any degree sweep for a 14W motor (a number listed on ebay), remove the plastic gear and use your existing 95 degree sweep metal eccentric, (that is asuming it is only the plastic gear that has stripped).

For reference, here is a selection of cars that carry this wiper motor (As far as I know)

Austin Mini - approx '68 onwards
Austin 1100/1300 - same dates
Morris 1000/Minor - same dates
Austin Allegro
Austin Maxi
Austin /Morris 1800
Morris Marina/Ital
TR6/7/8
Jag xj6 -'68 to about '82
MGB
MG Midget
Austin Princess, maybe ambassador.
I think Rover P6 and maybe SD1
Triumph Dolomite
Triumph Stag
Triumph Spitfire

I'm just wondering whether the very late classic minis had a more modern setup???

I'll look it up.

Phil
