Well, I finally got around to getting all my issues sorted out and down to the smog station. Well... it failed dismally on CO, so I need some thoughts and advice on what adjustments I need to make to get the CO emissions down and under 3.5%. I'm running a pretty standard 351C with a 600 cfm Holley carb and MSD ignition. I previously set the ignition timing at 9 degrees BTDC using a strobe and with the vacuum advance plugged.

Thanks

Julian,

retard the ignition (turn the distributor counter clockwise) until the motor will barely idle, re-adjust the throttle stop screw to bring the idle speed back up, now screw the idle jets in until each side drops the idle rpm by 100 rpm, then bring the idle speed back up again with the throttle stop screw. The engine should be idling much rougher than normal, but should pass smog. You have reduced the peak flame temperature & leaned out the carburetor.

After passing, you'll need to optimize everything again.

Now that I've told you my secret, we must become blood brothers or something.

Julian,
Your call but you have two options in NV. One open a PO box in Carson City or find a good friend in that area and register the car in that county. They do not have smog tests!

Second, after fiddling-farting around and if you are successful in passing. Get a historical license plate. As long as you keep the car reg current you only have to pass the smog test once and just show proof that it passed for years to come. Saves the hassle down the road.
Update: PASS

George's trick did the job, although I still needed the second chance option it did come in at 3.45% vs. limit of 3.5% on CO.

It overheated during the test (Fluidyne radiator and sucker fans have moved to #1 on the priority list of "to do's". I had to advance the ignition to get home again as it was so lumpy, but heck it's through for a year.

Thanks George for your wisdom. I'd happily become your blood brother if it means I get access to all that superior knowledge & information running through your veins Big Grin

RoverLtd: The PO Box in Carson sounds like the solution for next year. I did look previously at requirements for a NV Classic vehicle plate and didn't like the fact it limits you to 2500 miles/yr. Thanks for the heads up, if you ever want to hook up some time contact me off DTBB at julian_kift@hotmail.com
