I aquired my new car some time ago in the spring. i noticed that the temp was getting on the high side and noticed that the coolant was low. Note: the car had sat for 4 years. I noticed that the rad had a tiny leak and the water pump was leaking ever so slightly from the front seal. So, I replaced the pump with a weiand and recored the rad and installed twin electric suckers and put in a new 180 stat. That should take care of it, right? F#$K no.
I drove for a couple hundred miles with the temp guage never exceeding 195 deg.
Even during the Niagara rally, when everyone else saw their temps rising on the hot Saturday evening, my guage stayed at 190. On my ride home on the hiway, cruising at a mere 2300 rpm, the guage started to cycle from 180 to 200, then 180 to 210 and so forth until it nearly touched red.
It has been doing this ever since.
Notes:
It will stay at 180-190 at idle in the garage.
I've jacked the back up 3 times and it has run like that for more than 2 hours while I revved it up (pissing off the neighbours)
I can't get it to red in the garage, it'll only go to about 210
The pass head is hotter by 18 deg over the driver's side when temp taken from the rear with IR gun.
The stat has been changed twice. It seems to be opening when it's suppose to, but reaches temps it shouldn't.
Help.

Will, I am going to be following this thread with great interest. Mine is doing almost the exact same thing. Ran 185-190 for months, no problem. One day out of the blue, I glance down, temp gauge pinned at 220-225. New Stant 180 cleveland correct thermostat, flow tested the water pump, re-fill, water wetter. Feed and burp this thing so many freakin times it's worse than having a new born baby in the house. Yesterday I got caught in traffic, stop and go for 30-40 minutes. Temp steady at 190. Two minutes later I have a look, 220. I'm so frustrated, it's almost to the point, I am going to ignore the gauge until a hose blows off!! It's a bit unsettling, though, to look down and see the gauge pinned right off the dial. Anxiously waiting for any help or advice.

I don't know if this product is over there, but here we can buy a 'sock' this goes over a raditer hose and catches all the debris in the cooling system. It is scary what it catches.
It could be there is a piece of something blocking a hose ?? and then passing through ?
Just a thought, if the timing gets retarded for whatever reason the engine temp will climb.
Something to consider ...

My temp gage pegs full scale every once in a while when on a trip, I have learned it is an electrical problem with the gage wiring, and not a cooling system problem. If I turn the a/c off the gage goes back to a true reading.

The problem only happens on the road, I have not been able to duplicate the problem in the garage, therefore I haven't traced the problem yet. Its probably a bad ground or something.

I have also seen the oem coolant pipes that run beneath the car plugged solid with rust.

The first problem with the stock gauge is that it is not matched to the sending unit. Ford used a resister to correct the problem, which makes it about right at around 190 degrees. From what you are describing here, it sounds like you have a connection problem and a grounding problem. Very common in a Pantera given the fine Lucas type electrical system that they have. The I/R gun will tell you what is happening, but if you really want to know what your true temperature and oil pressure is, you need a matched gauge and sending unit. There is a company in New Mexico that can take the Veglia gauges and install VDO internals and a matched sending unit. This will make the gauges read correctly and still maintain the original look of the gauge set. My friend just did this with his car and the set up works great. I got away from the original Veglia gauges years ago because they will never give you an accurate indication of the oil pressure or water temperature. Running all of the power through the amp gauge is a little questionable also.
Will,

Go to a local plumbing supply and buy a temp guage 1/2 NPT ...remove the sender in the intake and put the guage in there ..I;m sure you will be able to see it thru the rear view mirror ..this will clarify the mistery of the accuracy of the sender. They all so make guages with capilary tubes .. that will give you the true reading.

I installed a new mechanical gauge yesterday and filled the system with 80% water (I won't keep it like this for more than 3 wks). I ran the car on rear jacks twice for considerable time. It was a cool afternoon/night and the car never went above 190 deg but.....I think it was running on 5-6 cylinders.
The car is tuned (old efi ) so rich that I foul plugs within a few hundred miles. I'll change the plugs tonight.
Should I run a hotter plug? Will this make them last longer if I'm running rich?
