Is it possible to remove and replace the distributor while the engine is in the car? The two problems I can think of are:

- won't clear the firewall/rear window
- won't go back in without pulling the oil pump

I have done a complete carburetor rebuild, and want to get the full benefit of it by checking the advance curve of the distributor. If I can do this in the car, that's great; if not, it can wait until I pull the motor next winter.

(I have rebuilt several motors, but never a small-block ford.)

Thanks.

Taking the distributor out isn't that bad. I had two different ones in and out of my engine several times last year. Have fun, after you do it once you will get the hang of it.
Unless you know for sure that the oil pump drive shaft and retainer is installed correctly I would not remove the distributor. If the shaft is incorrectly installed it will stick to the bottom of the distributer and then fall into the oil pan as you remove the distributer. You should be able to check the advance with timing light.

That's exactly the kind of warning I was looking for.

Judging by the state the carburetor was in, that's one bet I'm not going to make.

Thanks a bunch,
