A fellow owner reached out to me trying to understand why his clutch pedal has suddenly become extremely hard to depress.

It is a Centerforce clutch with about 2000 miles on it. He reports no strange occurrences, funny noises or vibrations. He has checked under dash linkage and slave linkage and sees nothing out of sorts.

I believe Centerforce pressure plates have movable weights and a blockage of clutch fluid are two other possibilities I’ve suggested.

Anyone have any other possible issues to check?

Thanks,

Larry

My Centerforce uses a standard external slave that drives the crossbar on the ZF housing. Nothing exotic.

I use the McLeod Throwout Bearing - it's adjustable for "height", but is a standard configuration.

PS - Be careful if you pull the pin on the slave - the piston wants to keep coming out. It's always a struggle for me to keep the clutch slave compressed, hold it on the bell housing, and get the bolts started. You need 4 hands, and 2 tie-wraps to do that by yourself.

I experienced this on my 74 stock set up. On initial start up and drive it was okay, but after some miles the clutch pedal would become progressively harder to push. It still shifted fine, just excessive pressure was required. Turned out to be the clutch master cylinder. Could have been blocking fluid as you mentioned due to rust. If it's the original master, it should be changed anyway.
Larry,

The reason I asked was that some of the aftermarket TOB sleeves ( McLeod adjustable for instance) do not have the proper channel machined into the center bore. This is there to hold a small amount of grease to lubricate the bearing retainer tube. I have seen several which have started to weld themselves to the tube ,due to a lack of lubrication, causing the clutch to become very hard to depress. It usually starts off as an intermittent issue and gets progressively worse.
