The throttle works both ways!

This is why we go to the track, anything that's fun to drive will break every speed limit on the continent in 2nd gear! (It does make it a little hard to tune things, doesn't it?)

I had a sticker on the speedo of my GT-350 that said: "Driver's License" because I knew the next time I stuck my foot in it I would lose the license.

On the other hand, you may wake up dead. Find a safe place to play.
Pope:

Are you implying that what David was doing was unsafe?

Because, if you are, I call "bullsh*t!"

I can guarantee he was safer in his properly sorted high performance machine at the speed he was going than the other drivers around him who were yacking on the phone while driving their indifferently maintained and mediocre performing cars. I don't hear you telling them to go play somewhere safe.

It really gets me when people delude themselves into thinking that arbitrary speed limits set for the lowest common denominator among drivers and machines are somehow a moral threshold for responsibility or safety.

Face it; at the speed he was going, David and his machine were capable of stopping in a shorter distance, or performing any emergency information faster, than the perfectly legal beater or truck next to him. Do you consider the trucker to be endangering anyone? No. You only point the finger at David because you have bought into the safety-Nazi hysteria that 'speed kills'.

The reductio ad absurdum of your way of thinking would have us all driving at a walking pace. Speed limits reflect what engineers reasonably expect the trucker in his 80,000lb rig with hard compound retread tires to be able to handle more or less safely. They are not set according to what a high performance sports car with an attentive driver can handle safely. Speed does not kill. That's a fallacy, plain and simple. Drivers exceeding their skill and the capability of their machine kill. There's a big difference.
From one who knows David ... He is a great driver who knows his capabilities and the capabilities of his vehicles.

Poping 90 km in a 50 km zone is easy to do even in a Ford Focus, Jeep Cherokee (ask me how I know) or even in a SMART Car !! But, they don't attract the attention as much as an Italian Exotic.

Let's face it. "Des Flics" set up the laser/radar trap in that spot because it was EASY to exceed the speed limit in that place. They knew it would be a great place to hand out tickets. Unfortunately for David, at a moment of inattention and DeTomaso exuberence he got nailed.

And, .... David,

Knowing how you drive, do you really think the result would have been different in that SMART CAR?

What about our other buddies: Driving down the highway. Thinking they are respecting all the laws and rules of the road, When ... BANG-OH they get tickets for not having plates on the front of their cars !! Just as maintenance, repairs and updates cost more - so does the cost of ownership.

We live but once. Enjoy your "Pantera Passion" my friend !!!

Yea, I "enjoyed" mine earlier this week.

Cited 58 in a 40.

But they missed the 105 in the same 40 two miles further back in the countryside.

And the 120 in the 45 waaay out in the country.

And I just finished paying the fine for the Labor Day 84 in a 50.

Looks like I may be taking David's place once he gets his "Smart Car.

Most of what you say is true.

However, you are implying a lot into my post which I did NOT say. Further, you suffer from myopia. (shortsightedness)

As far as "bullsh*t!" - you seem to be the expert and I will defer to your expertise.

The "offending person" (no matter who, and that often includes myself) is often unsafe if anyone can see the trangression, as this often means there could be another vehicle with in collision distance. We won't get into pets and kids here - that would be too much for you to process.

"the other drivers around him " is exactly my point. An offending driver has no control over others on the road. (and the other drivers have a right to NOT be endangered, at least here in the greatest country, YMMV) Sure, this offenders car is probably safer than most, the offender may even have the skills to match the car. But I can say without doubt, he cannot control the environment around him.

The offending driver may, or may not, care what would happen to the car in an accident. I say it would be a SIN to wreck that white car. In fact, it would be a sin to wreck any pantera, whether it is due to inattentive driving (this can be anybody) or major over estimation of skills.

We have not addressed why the offender was speeding. Italian tune up? late for donuts? Not paying attention? (This is very easy to do in a Pantera) Showing off or whatever. (and I could cite dozens more sickening scenarios) BUTT (big but) it really doesn't matter, does it? Ask a Pantera driver who has stuffed his car into a tree if it was worth it? The final result will be sickening.

Has anyone in Canada ever hit a moose? (child, another car, a pet, a cow, you choose) Why? Can't you just stop? or drive around? Maybe it was just an "accident", eh? Accidents happen (yes at all speeds), why push the odds?

My guess is that speed limits are a good thing - hopefully (and yes to would be an intersting contest to determine if canadian or american bureaucrats are dumber) the limits are determined by possilbe road conditions, possible hazards and painfully (as you point out) the LCD "driving skill quotient." If you aren't endorsing safety, you are just plain stupid.

I know I am far safer at a track day with Bob B blowing by me or Mike D outbraking me into a corner than I am on my way to work. I also moderate my speed accordingly.

Once again, please don't put words in my mouth ( "You only point the finger at David because you have bought into the safety-Nazi hysteria that 'speed kills'." or "ad absurdum of your way of thinking would have us all driving at a walking pace.") - all I said was to drive with your brain and not your penis (the bumper sticker that says "Nice Pantera, sorry about the size of your penis" might have been made for you.) and be safe. This is probably good advice for typing, too. If you still think you were right, I can only offer the one finger salute.

Your little rant is quite entertaining, with good use of big words. It is similar to the philosophy I was in favor of in the early 1960s. Even I understood (not long after) that the street was not the place to proving stupidity.

In summary: the throttle works both ways, play somewhere safe. (I stand by this.)

YOU said what was done was unsafe . . . .

Yes, I am probably beyond good manners. Bad taste for good reason.

"Lord, I apolgize for what I said and all the suffering pygmies in the jungle"

Hey,

Thanks for those of you coming to my defense. And thanks for the straight talk from the Pope. But guys, this was not me blasting around racing grandmas or tuner cars for fun. If that was what I was looking for I would go elsewhere to do it.

This was me driving home from filling up with fuel for the winter. Slowly inching along in traffic we descended down a steep hill under an overpass. I shifted into second and for about one full second down the hill must have reached all of 55 mph before being slowed by gravity as it went back uphill.

This spot is about 1/4 mile from my house. A road I travel about 6 times a day. In 12 years I have never seen a cop here. Hiding a cop on the uphill section right where everyone turns would be dangerous. And stupid.

That's why I'm pissed. They are in a spot where going downhill it is almost impossible not to break the limit. And for 1 lousy kilometer of recorded speed (.6 mph) the cop would have been able to issue a normal ticket, get money and points - but avoid the whole "excessive speed" and lost license deal.

I'm going to remember to ask the question that Mark posed. Sorry guys. This was not me being an idiot (which in my life I have certainly been before). These were a##hole cops.

i know exactly where you got your ticket, you can easely go 55 mph there, downhill, btw it used 2 be a 40 mph zone, close to where i live, the city has just changed the speed limit from 45 to 30 on a country road, just to hand out larger tickets...they want your goods and they're going to get it

why don't you clowns just go out to the track and pay for lap time? better than losing you license.
Sheesh

Clowns? Hey Steve, why don't you take your racing car to the race track, ask one of the track techs for a checkered flag and stick it up your ass?
What kind of comment is that? If you've never gotten a speeding ticket, you're either lying or you're some dick driving 40 in the passing lane.
On a good day, I can run 90kmh. Dave wasn't the only guy they ticketed that day. I'm sure they got all sorts of other non-performance cars. It's a cash grab.
Ever driven in Europe, Steve?
There's a dick in every crowd.

Good to hear, Dave B.

There is teh "Pantera factor" - which I totally forgot! If you are driving a Pantera, EVERYONE sees you. Get yourself a monkey-sh!t brown minivan and speed to your heart's content!

All teh best . . .

Hmmm..., so, according to Steve H, that erudite and profound sage from Danville, I am a clown. Pope has a rather longer list of insults ranging from myopia to stupidity, and somehow even manages to work my penis into it.

It’s always easier to call someone names than to address their argument, isn’t it?

There is an old Chinese saying that, when two rickshaw drivers collide, you can always tell which one lost the argument about who was at fault because he is the one to start shouting personal insults first.
Yeah, I just wanted to p!$$ you off. But once again, I never called you names, just a few obtuse insults.

You sure didn't address my arguements, which is evidence.

You HAVE proved the old saying, thanks for the lesson!

cheers,

LOL if I was only 19 years old again it would have been dejavu ... their lights wnet on a my foot went to the floor .. in seconds it was bye bye ... no ticket.

Will,

(LOL) Don't beat around the bush, just come out and say what you really feel!

David,

These comments (debates) are going to occur in any thread about any topic, so continue posting (or venting, which is healthy). We enjoy being a part of your life.

I actually found this thread to be quite entertaining!

Will is right you are a D**K with your post Steve and your 2nd post show me how much of a kid you are.

I love this statement "Take it to the track" or "go to the track" etc. etc. etc. Anyone who uses statements like that is full if it. Yeah like you never broken the speedlimit, or race another car on the street. You don't buy a sportcar to be just like ever other John Doe. Yeah there is a time and place, Dave just got busted and it sucks..!
Dave, sorry to hear about this happening to you again especially at the end of the season. Unfortunatelly they salted our roads after a light snowfall this week, so no more drives this year for me. When I was doing my research before purchasing my car I came across this, don't know the author though:

"Pantera’s are easily the baddest ride you can buy. No quirky purists either. These aren't toys to impress the boys at the golf club, these are evil machines meant to be driven, spanked and put away with the aroma of burnt rubber, high octane gas and a pair of panties on the floor”
Sort of puts it in perspective!
Backmarker, you're taking my pain away. That's a great one. I'll add it to my collection of interesting Pantera quotes for sure. Until I heard that, my favorite was this one about comparing driving a Ferrari to a Pantera.

"Driving a Ferrari is like being married to a prima ballerina. Driving a Pantera is like dating a hooker."
All is well that ends well David. At the end of the day you still own that killer Pantera! Unfortunately this type of law enforcement taints peoples views of the poilce at times (mine too). Don't let it get to you. When I was younger I used to get picked on profusely by the police, I deserved much of it but in retrospect certainly not a lot of it, that's life in the big city ... errr, make that the Great White North home of the Great White Killer Cat! Happy Holidays!!
Now if you only knew a Canadian Tax Revenue specialist and the officers name ..... I'm sure that officer would never have anything to hide with a painless tax audit.......

You know what they say about paybacks.....

David, sorry to hear about what happened with you and your car -- I hope you talk to a lawyer to see if you can get it knocked down a little bit. I know the best defense in a situation like that here in the states is that ".... I was just keeping up to traffic ...." which I am sure was your case. If you were weaving in and out of traffic would be another thing, but if you were just doing what everyone else was doing and they pulled you over because of a sharp car, you may get some sympathy from the judge -- ask a lawyer and see what they say.

Bonne chance!

Mark

P.S. If I ever get busted, I would be honored to have you as a cell mate!
