From a previous thrash on this topic:

Here is a list of the currently available gear oils that match RBT's recommendation. This isn't an exhaustive list. I'm sure there are others but these are the ones I know of. There may also be GL-5 gear oils that are OK (eg. Redline 75W-90NS) but because Lloyd Butfoy says to use GL-4 gear oils, that's what I've listed here. Lloyd also recommends changing your gear oil annually, regardless of mileage driven, due to condensation forming inside the case. In fact, the less you drive your Pantera the more important this is.

Conventional (mineral based):

PennGrade Classic GL4, 80W-90

Driven Oils, GL4, 80W-90

Richmond Gear, GL4, 80W-90

VP Racing Classic, GL4, 80W-90

Synthetic:

Redline MT90, GL-4, 75W-90

Penzoil Platinum, GL4, 75W-90

Amsoil, GL4, 75W-90, Manual Transmission and Transaxle Gear Lube

German oil in the German transmission…

German? Only in name. It was manufactured or at least components machined in Israel.

As far as lube goes, 30 years ago Gary Hall recommended going to full synthetic MTL to quiet some gear grinding in mine and it worked.

He said it "might" create some leaking in the back but that was easy to correct with some o-ringed flat washers.

In this case I would say he was 100% correct. In my case the MTL was the solution and works completely "as advertised".

No one listens to me so I already understand the response to this in advance. In fact, the Doctor asked, "Doug. Why do you talk to yourself?' I said, "that's easy to answer. I am the only one that listens."

Nothing new here. That's the way it will always be. My 50 years of experience with these cars apparently means nothing at all.

Not really. It beats being waken up in the middle of the night because you are the expert.

I'm happy. No one asks me questions. They don't even tell me the music I listen to sucks. That's a good environment for me.

But poor Doug? Yes. I spend all my money on drugs, sex and rock n' roll and the rest on my cars.

I learned a long time ago that there is always someone that has to walk in the wet cement or touch the wet paint and that I can't save them from it. I always keep trying though. It is one of my many character flaws. Everyone here knows that.
