Hi Guys,

I am installing A/C on a 72 Pantera that has had it totally removed in the past. All that remained was the evaporator. I have no experience with AC. I have installed a Kirk Evans compressor/alternator bracket to reduce the bulkhead bulge and have installed a modern type evaporator in front of the radiator. I have also installed a modern type rotary compressor and new expansion valve. My question is how do I get the capillary tube into the heater/evaporator box? I can see the little rubber grommet in the side of the case near the expansion valve so I assume this is where it goes in but how do I get it into the core? Do I have to take the heater box apart? This has been a lot of work!

Chris/Alasroa,

I managed to do it without taking the dash out and pulling the heater box apart, I cheated and pulled the rubber drain pipe off the back of the heater box and looked up the tube with a torch, I could clearly see the evaporator so I gently pushed a piece of wire into the fins to make an entrance and then stuck the capillary tube into the core approx 1". I was careful to position the tube at the top of the pipe so that the water will still drain out of the car and not onto the carpet. I then cut a slit in the rubber drain pipe and clamped it back on. I will probably put a dab of silicone around where the capillary comes out of the top of the rubber pipe just to make sure. I think this should work.

Thanks for your help.

Regards, Johnny

Hi Mark, I dont think you would need to replace your Evaporator. They hardly ever fail or leak. They sit in a protected environment compare to the Condenser and they operate with a lot less pressure. Typically 50Psi where the High pressure side (Condenser) is 5-6 higher. The ones I have seen fail is due to people have drilled through them or over torqued the connections. But of course never say never ;-)
