Well I got royally screwed by Paypal. Had an Ebay item that was not as described and filed a claim with Paypal who ruled in my favor. They instructed me to return the item with a signed delivery and they would refund my purchase price, but return shipping was on my coin.

Well I did as instructed and then they wrote back and said the seller does not have funds in his Paypal account so no refund, so I'm out the item/my $505 plus $40 return shipping.

Just want others to be aware that Paypal's so called 'protection' offers absolutely no protection whatsoever, even though it states the item, is covered in the auction.

Yeah I always do pay by credit card, it's just they would have you beleive that you are protected and that is pure fantasy at best, they are never out of pocket and do very littel to pursue any claim. If they'd made that clear I'd have just kept the item and put some $$ to fix it.

If you file a charge back by credit card they freeze your Paypal account. I'm going this route and then closing my Paypal account anyway, better to miss a few items than take the chance.

There is a class action lawsuit against them apparently.

For all the good THAT will do. Mad

I too had a 'not-as-described- that Paypal resolved in my favor. I however refused to incur the return shipping charges, partly due to the little 'no funds-no refund' clause.

I was lucky, I listed the item (which was NOS, but not what they said it was) and sold it for MORE than I had paid. Big Grin

Still, all-in-all, I've had close to 600 eBay transactions, most using Paypal, and never really had a problem.

I know it is a hassle, but have one Paypal account that just receives money, and another to pay with. At least one will/ should always be operational. All you have to do is open another checking account or savings account -- I know a pain, but will get around these kinds of hassles with loser eBay people. Same thing with eBay, two accounts; one for selling and one for buying. Works for me.

Me too.

Nice thing about a buy only account is you can keep the whole entire damn world from seeing what you buy by choosing to make your feedback comments "Private".

Ebay will not allow such a "Private" account to sell, however. Thus, the two accounts.

Hmmm....if I'd seen that in the small print maybe I wouldn't have sent it back. Annoying part is I could have fixed it for about $125, it cost me $40 to send back.
I was told a while back never to attach your bank account to your paypal accout to get verified.
A freind said that if there is a problem of some sort paypal can freeze your bank account.
Is that true?
I have just reached my $5000.00 pay pal limit and need to get verified in order to buy more using pay pal.
I dont understand why i have a limit when i can spend a lot more on my visa.
I was thinking on going to another bank other then my regular banks getting an account just to get verified.
What do you think?

I have two bank accounts linked to my Paypal accounts.

One for household purchases, one for Pantera business. The Pantera account is at another bank, and keeps my S.O. happy, knowing I am not breaking the family bank for 2511.

You can toggle between them in Checkout procedure.

My credit card used for backup is really a debit card, but they don't know that. TRY getting more than is really in there. Wink

Also, you can link multiple eBay accounts to your Paypal account.

I figure THEY have US sign all sorts of agreements giving them all sorts of legal abilities, and WE get squat. Everything I do to cover my ass from THEIR goof ups and greed is fair game.

I also had the same experience trying to get a PayPal refund for something that was never shipped to me. They found in my favor but of course couldn't get the money back from the vendor. My experience with the PayPal buyer protection is that is is virtually an outright fraud and certainly misleading at best.
Keep your PayPal balance at $0 & have your cc as alternate funding. That way you can pay with your cc. If there is a problem, you can work with your cc company. I have cash back on my cc. It's like getting a discount on the item that I purchase.

Starting 11/01/08, PayPal's buyer protection is supposed to be for 100% of your winning bid. I recently filed a claim for non receipt of an eBay item & got a 100% refund. The Seller didn't have any funds in his PayPal account.
