Hello guys

Everything is in the title

I am from France and I bought my pantera in USA 8 months ago and because of an uncompetent garage the ZF ran with few oil in it.

So I'm locking to replace it and I have an opportunity with a Maserati Ghibli ZF Gearbox, will it fits the Pantera?
I've heard it can go on a GT40 with the right bellhousing
so I admit if I have the pantera bellhousing I could go for it
And is it as good as original GT40's and Panteras's transaxle ?

Follow this link if you want to see a picture of the plate on my ZF
It's a dash 2 whereas my Pantera is 1971 so should be a dash 1 ???

Cayman,

A few things.

The ZF transaxle is probably not from a Ghibli. If it was from a Ghibli (front-engined car), I don't believe it would be compatible with a Pantera. The Maserati BORA shares the same ZF transaxle (with sub variants Dash 1, Dash 1.5, Dash 2) with the Pantera, GT40, Mangusta and BMW M1. The Pantera runs the box "upside-down" to some of the other cars and it is not simply a matter of turning it 180 degrees and attaching it to the Pantera housing.

All that said, you are more likely to find an "upside-down" Pantera ZF around because there were more produced for the pantera than all the rest combined. If you do happen to have an "upside-down" box, you might be further ahead selling it and buying a Pantera one, as the flipped boxes are in shorter supply. Only early '71 cars came with a "Dash 1" so yours is likely a Dash 2 (the photo of the data plate shows it to be a Dash 2 which will fit no problem).

Great looking car. I hope you get her back on the road quickly.

Mark
I thought the Pantera runs the box normally and some others cars upside down...

I have listed some cars above using the same ZF, so wich one would fits the Pantera (running the box the same way) ???

Ford GT40
Maserati Bora
Lamborghini Miura (not sure at all it's the same gearbox)
BMW M1
Any other you could tell me ?

In europe it's very very hard either to find parts or to find a used one.

Thanks to both of you
Try to get in touch with Fabrice Bernollin at Still racing in Toulouse, he and his team know Panteras quite well and might be able to help you with the rebuilt. It will be cheaper than buying an extra gearbox, you never know what is the condition ! At least, you'll know what you have with Fabrice, and he is NOT a bullshitter !
Also, go check www.racecarsdirect.com. There is a Swiss guy always advertizing for ZF dash i or 2 spares ( expensive, but ready to use )
Are you coming to Spa Italia De Tomaso ( 4-5 June ) if your car is ready ?
Well, very precious informations for me.
Especially the contact in Toulouse,it could save me ! I'll call tomorrow because it's night time here in France.

Thanks

Unfortunately I'm living in LILLE which is very far from italy (it's in the north of France near belgium)so I won't make it.

Patrick, I guess you are familiar with France to know those addresses ?

Fred

I own a 73 Maserati Bora. The trans is mounted in the same configuration as the pantera. It has a 3.77 final deive ratio and the rear mount is on the back cast iron cover sort of like the -1 although it is in fact a -2 trans. I tried to swap it once with my spare pantera box just to see the difference wiht the 4.22 ratio. I found that the input shaft is not the same. The Bora has a finer multiple tooth spline as oposed to the pantera's 10 spline. So to answer your question the Bora's trans will not fit. At least not exactly. But it can be made to work.
I'm starting to check if I can rebuil my ZF instead of replace it.
Does anyone knows a place in USA where we can find parts for out Panteras transaxles ?

Thanks to Patrick, I've call a french company today which told me that they bought ZF parts in USA and it's not from RBT Trans.
in fact they even told me RBT trans was just a reseller from a different source for the parts.
hum... Sounds strange to me...
Anyone can tell something about that ?
Hi Fred,
It reminds me of something !
Last year , when I was with Candy ( my factory GR4 ) at Le Mans Classic, I was approached by a very kind German lady ( Janine VOGLER ) who was working for the ZF manufacturing plant in Friedrichshafen.
She then told me that, considering the success of vintage car racing, ZF was considering re-manufacturing ZF spares.
I searched for her business card today, and lucky you, I just found it !
Her email address is janine.vogler@zf.com... Maybe that 's the most simple solution if ZF went on with the project !
Will you be kind enough to keep us ALL informed :>))
Thanks and good luck.
Also, BTW, what kind of spares do you need ? I have plenty and might be able to help you out.
Thanks again for this precious information Patrick, I'll call tomorrow and of course I'll all let you know what's going on.

Here is the list of parts I need for the moment...yes I know 2 of them are the most expenseive ...
Parts number refers to RBT drawings. I might need some other parts too.

- part N°229 Input shaft and 1st gear
- All of the gaskets
- All of the bearings
- part N°401 and N° 402 Ring and pinion set
- is it possible to put a multiple fingers clutch instead of a 2 fingers, if yes how much does it costs ?
- Synchoring 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
- kit d'embrayage (french name, I'm still looking for traduction)
- disque de mécanisme butée (french name, I'm still looking for traduction)
- émetteur récepteur embrayage (french name, I'm still looking for traduction).

Patrick, It would be an incredible chance if you have only one of those and if you would like to sell...tell me what

Fred
Hello guys,

I've done some research about ZF parts for historical vehicles, on ZF's website they have a pretty big section concerning old parts and they say that they a rebuilding them and you can buy...but in facts :

- I filled up a form on their website
- I've sent an email to an adress in Germany
- I've contacted a french dealer

I only got news from the french dealer...not even an answer from the form I filled up or the email I've sent

According to the ZF french dealer (I asked him for parts) :
"Bonjour,

Quick traduction :
"Hello, After some researches, we can't sell those parts,ZF German's stock are empty after multiples demand of cars clubs.
An important stock of parts had been sold several years ago to RBT trans in US...."and then he invited me to go on RBT website.

So we can give it up about ZF in Germany...

I just opened a new discussion with a new title because this discussion doesn't match the title anymore

Mike Mayberry of Mayberry Lincoln-Mercury in CA acquired a load of ZF spares recently (his username is 'King' on this forum).

You can probably get away with a used Ring & Pinion.

Other good sources are;
RBT direct
Dennis Quella at Pantera Performance Center, Colorado

Once you have spares pricing you might want to evaluate cost of a replacement ZF vs. rebuilding yours. I have a used (previously rebuilt) one for sale at US$6500.
