Greetings
I purchased my '74 about 15 months ago; a pretty decent car and probably paid a bit too much at the time but you know how it goes, I wanted the car. At the time,I was also looking at Ferrari Dinos but they were already way outside my budget. As a newbie to European exotics, I could not grasp the huge price disparity between Dinos and Panteras...still can't but now the disparity is even greater. Granted, I am now another biased Pantera owner, but I think Panteras are still today a relative bargain. When I look at what has happened to air cooled Porsches, e type Jags and even Sunbeam Tiger pricing, I am surprised Panteras aren't priced even higher.
As an aside, some years back, when Pontiac GTOs went thru a period of price escalation, more of the rougher cars became restoration candidates which opened the door for suppliers to produce an array of reproduction parts that previously were not cost justified. Wonder if the same could happen with the Pantera?

SteveD,

As Pantera owners we're lucky to have a great variety of builders, restorers, parts suppliers and inventors of quality replacement components. Thanks in part to this PI Board, it’s easy to find a solid network for any help we might need.

I don't think the occasional high price paid for some Panteras is going to affect the overall growth in the value of our cars. Most owners I know still have trouble trying to get our insurance providers to up the 'agreed value' when we want to increase our coverage. Try to get the evaluation experts to reliably price our cars based on this “high dollar market.”

Like most others here on this board I love the way these cars look and how well they perform. I also don't care about the investment. And doubt I will ever get back all the money I lavish on these exhilarating beasts.

You can still find a great Pantera for not much money. I’m glad we still have no ‘pedigree’ like the other Italian marques. The fact that the Ring Bros, SEMA and Foose have recently shown such interest can only be good for all. But the real interest in our old supercars may come when the next flaky industrialist buys the brand and actually builds a decent car to bear the logo. Then the old cars will be hunted down by collectors and the value will honestly rise.

At that point I’ll take all the good stuff off mine, get all those old ugly things out of my storage room and return it to its poor performing, unreliable, original state and sell it for enough to build another blasphemous killer creation of Mr Tjaarda’s original beauty.

First off, I've heard this song time after time, "I don't care how much it's worth". Fine. I take your word for it. Wink

Next thing I know is the car is for sale and the guy won't take one penny less than a gazillion dollars...just because. No problem. You only need to sell just one?

As far as Foose goes, let's hope that his winds up as a recognizable version of the Pantera, not like the "what is it" Ring Bros., and winds up in a feature length film like "Gone in 60 seconds".

Then the car will be discovered and re-born. Look for Nicholas Cage coming to try and steal it? Get Angelina Jolie to drive it maybe?

Then it will be "Que sera, sera", and hold on tight?
Hello David B
Yes you're right about the whole Pantera experience. But it's pretty much impossible to predict future values on classic and specialty cars; maybe easier to predict stock market direction. It does seem that there is a lot of interest in good European and British classics right now and the phrase "a rising tide floats all boats" comes to mind. Ferrari prices are pretty much off the chart and collectors start looking around for other opportunities. Jay Leno's piece on Panteras may have opened a few eyes as well. Who knows?

Everyone should feel free to offer their opinions without that opinion, or themselves, being critiqued.

True, that's why I don't come here anymore. Just picked up an Ithaca Green LP640, so now remain on the Lambo forums where conversations are much more civilized, but thought I would return just to see how things are...same old.
Jan,

Congratulations on the new acquisition, does that mean you sold one of the Pantera's?

It would be neat to have you provide a side by side comparison of the Lambo and Pantera.

The forum took a little excursion but is returning to it's former glory, please do continue to contribute.

Oh dear? Say there old chap would you happen to have any Grey Poupon? Wink
Hey Jan, congrats on the new toy!

And what's wrong with this forum? We miss your posts. I dunno about other forums (I'm a one marque madman) but criticism is what happens when you post your own thoughts on a public space. Otherwise, you might as well just talk to yourself.

Oh wait... I do that and always seem to agree with me! Awesome.

Hey Julian & David, etc. I'm not the moderator, but was just chiming in with George comment. Things did get a little funky compared to the past, but George is great about reeling things in with the true DeTomaso community. As far as me, I won't rob the original post by getting into other sidebar subjects, but just to reply to the question about my LP640...it's a Coupe. Plus, regarding comparing, it may not be right to get into the lose lose situation of comparing the LP640 to the Pantera, as they are two different types of cars, and each has their own pros & cons that could be contested over & over. In my opinion they are not meant to compare, unlike for instance comparing my SL65 to my SL600 which fits more for comparison in the same league. However one of my neighbors refers to the LP640 as "The Holy Grail", for whatever that is. Smiler I had some Grey Poopie for lunch, now feel better.

Sharkey in the original post wants us to stick together as a group and keep prices high, but I don't see that happening because everyone sells for different reasons. Some fire sell for immediate need, some sell just to get into something else, some just because they need massage therapist money with Bambi, etc...to each his own.
