i'm running an inverted zf-2 in ERA gt40. On the back is a cone shaped device on the lower left. It has a plug at the end of the cone. The plug now points down. before being inverted this would have pointed up. The plug has a hole in the center on the inside and a metal cap pressed into the center on the outside. The problem is it drips from the center. Can i just change this over to a solid plug and not create any problems?

Actually, from what I understand, the ZF is actually right side up in a GT-40. They mount it upside down in a Pantera for additional ground clearance. So I am not sure what your cone shaped thing is, but it might be where the speedometer cable is supposed to go, which on a Pantera would be on the right side, but since you are right side up, would be on the left side. Does this make any sense??
Holy cow Loyd. It is I who am sorry. That doesn't look like any FZ I have ever seen so I am way out of my leauge and shouldn't comment. There is a guy who posts here who is named Loyd also and he is the ultimate ZF expert, he own his own ZF shop called RGT I think. But I have never seen a tranny that looked like that one so I am lost completely. Frowner
DeTom,

This is the same ZF that is used in both the Pantera and Mangusta. In this car and the Mangusta, it is mounted 'right side up'. In the Pantera it is spun 180 degrees on the crank centerline, so it is mounted 'upside down'. The box on the right is where the shift linkage goes into. On our Panteras, it would be on the upper left.

Lloyd Butfoy is the owner of RBT (he has a link to his website in the 'Links' section on the bottom of the PI homepage), specializing in ZFs and his own trans creations used on some of today's supercars. He is also the moderator of the ZF forum and the man to speak with about ZFs.

But Micheal, that one doesn't look anything like mine at all. Mine has little tiny bolts holding on the linkage cover and it has a flat back to it, not that pointy thing. And mine is silver aluminum. No sir it doesn't look at all like that one. I bet someone put a powerglide in mine and didn't tell me. Boy wouldn't that honk you off. I probably got a dumb old chevy tranny and don't even know it. Sorry Loyd. I stared at your picturwe some more and finally saw what I was looking at. I am not positive what the function of that bolt is as mine does not have one there, but what is inside that housing the bolt is on is a cross shaft from the shifter linkage. It may be an access hole to either adjust or to tighten, but do not go by what I say. The ZF is one area to avaoid unless you know absolutely what you are doing because yes, you CAN screw it up by just taking a bolt out that you don't know what it is. You really need to contact that guy Micheal and I were talking about. Loyd is his name. The ZF is the most expensive part on the car. I think you would be ok putting a rubber washer on that bolt but I am not going to stand behind that for sure. I have heard stories of people looseining bolts only to have parts fall down inside the tranny turning it in to scrap metal. You must contact LOYD.

I am sorry Mark but I am grossly incompetant when it comes to making pictures and then scanning in to the computer. I still owe you pictures of my floormats which the guy at work was supposed to take but then forgot. I know everyone posts pictures and I love them too, but It is harder for me due to my numbnuts factor. That being I am kinda of a numbnuts., But anyway I am going to try and sell my wheels here this fall and I am going to take a bunch of pics then. Maybe if I get more used to doing it I will figure out the best way and start posting more pics??? I probably would have tried to really sell my car here but everyone asks for pictures and stuff and it would take me months to just take enough pictures to sell the car. Once again, my sincere appologies for my lack of photgraphic competancy.
Sory for the slow reply/ that is the reverse detent spring, it's leaking becase it was dropped on the floor or a floor jack hit it, that part in the middle is a press in cap to hold in the spring. You can remove the whole thing and clean it and use a sealer to cover the cap or buy a new one for $120.00 !!
You might just try replacing the ring, gasket, under the plug...this is what's leaking.
What did you do about the relief tube ?

Hey guys not an english guy. Just a era owner in Connecticut. I ended up solving my problem with a little thread sealer. It appeared to be coming form the center of the plug. When it did it with another plug and a new copper gasket thats when the thread sealer came out an fixed the problem.

Sorry Lloyd. When I think of the GT40 I think of england. My brain gets more befuddled by the day. My offer of a straight up trade still stands though. Big Grin
