Have started disassembling 8MA642 for a repaint. When pulling the components off the back end of the car (which is red), appears that the car may have been dark brown or gold at some point in it's early life. Any idea who or if someone as the production data on the 401 Mangusta's -- color, engine, etc?

Thanx
Mark

FWIW, there are (were) some build sheets back when there was a FACTORY. A few of us got copies.
The info was not as descriptive as one would like (compared to Mustangs, chevies & Mopars)

Exterior colour is noted as is engine & trans number, apart from that not much valuable info.

PROVAMO is just a bank of info shared by owners and volunteers.
If its of burning interest, Santiago DeTomaso has some or most of the factory build records for the cars DeTomaso built. He has a small business in Modena and for a fee he will look up what records exist for your car. There may be none. What exists will not be vital info for most cars, but may fill a knowlege-gap for you. Most that do this are Pantera owners, but I think he has build-records for the others too.
Thanx for the inputs. Was in Modena Sep 2013 wish I'd known about Santiago D lookup. Went to factory site (atch) -- sad.

Day one of paint prep (atch), and second rebuild process (last time in 2008/9). Will pull motor next. Will put in correct cam for Webers/69 Boss 302 motor -- reversion and rough running killing me now with wrong cam. May try to figure out how to reinstall jack shaft with Webers and build some headers this time around as well.

Thanx Dick

Just checked and did not find that plate immediately visible. I have not yet pulled off carpet around the 3 reservoirs or the latch mechanism. What part of the carpeting covers the plate -- the drivers side where the reservoirs reside or the firewall where the hood latch resides? I did find the stamp stating exemptions on the inside of the hood.

brk brk

Also, I noticed quite a bit of leaves, etc in the cavity below the louvers in front of the windshield fluid sprayers? Is there a way to get in there and clean it out?

Thanx
Mark

Do you know what the fee is for the build records?
Have any these build records so I'll see what I pay for?
Mark, to clean out the area under the washer jets take off both the shields at the rear of the front wheel arches. You will then have better access to the panel that runs across to the area. Get a flexible plastic rod and attach a brush and clean away then try a vacuum with a small hose extension. Takes forever, but when happy the majority has gone blow with compressed air. I then soaked the area in cavity wax.

It lists engine and color numbers.

Dick,

Is this the plate you mean? Most of the ones that I have seen are not stamped. Of those that are, I have never seen two that are stamped in the same way (information stamped, placement, size of stamping, typeface, die type, etc.) so I believe they were not stamped at the factory. Regardless, none of the ones I have seen indicate where the color would go. Is there a different plate that you can share a photo of?

The one document I do have that shows the factory color is my build sheet that I obtained many years ago.

Thanks, Mark

Thanx to all for various answers

I think I'd really like to take 8MA642 back to its original color. Found an ISO color template on the Mangusta Thread on Ferrari Chat from that timeframe that might relate.

In the absence of a being able to find the color nomenclature on the car, where would be the best spot on the car to start sanding down to find the layers of color?

Somewhere along the line, someone indicated to me this might have been the 1969 Chicago Auto Show car. I found pictures on line of that show and the Mangusta, but no VIN. The color of that car happened to be an odd copper gold color. In pulling the back end of the car apart, I can see traces of such a color below the red (but then again, I might be just imagining that!!).
Please take a look at attachment. Color layers from top to bottom appear to be:

- Black (hard to get off)
- Red (hard to get off)
- Gray primer (easy to get off)
- Rust colored prime (easy to get off)
- Copper/Tan (hard to get off - guessing original color)
- White primer

Anyone have a car that is the copper/tan color and know the paint code?

Thanx much

reach out, I knew who had purchased the paint chips, I had made an offer but another owner beat me to the purchase. That person will surely give you an indication of the original color code. Try Fchat too!

Best

Finding the original chart will be hard because a lot of us would like one. The good news is it looks like there are only a few colors that are close in the bronze range. I wish I had the codes from the back of this, but I'm not sure they'd be of much use anyway. The chances are high that you will uncover areas of your car that remain the original color and you can have it matched. Good luck!

I have my reservations about a Boss302 in a Mangusta. ( or even a HiPo289 - except maybe the 1st 5-10 cars).

D0ZE-A would be a casting. AS Ron stated if there is a number stamped in the block behind the intake , that's an indication , the motor was originally in another car. The Mangusta motors would not have had any number stamped there but would have a number stamped on the intake on the flat area where the jackshaft sits.

Well, had to know if stamp you mentioned was on intake. Nope, no stamp, just casting date 5/12/69 and # C9ZE9424-E.

Although whoever installed motor (whether factory or after delivery) did a hack job to make pass exh man fit thru new frame, they did a great job modifying this Goose with a tubular frame that is lower than the standard 302 frame to accommodate the wider Boss motor. Picture not so good but gives an idea how frame was modified.
