Maybe someone knows somebody that hasn't advertised there's yet/recently....

I am selling my 69 427/435 Corvette (keeping my '68 427 Camaro) to fund a Pantera. I have always loved Italian cars (Alpha's, some Lamborghini's & of course Ferrari's! - Even owned a Fiat spider...) but equally love American muscle. The Pantera seams like the perfect "compromise"!

The Corvette I'm selling needs restoration. I, like many people posting here, would love to restore a car, but work, space, time etc. makes it unrealistic right now. Therefore, here is what I am looking for:

1) A car to be driven! I hope the day never comes where I buy a car I am not willing to drive on public roads! Granted it will be on the nicest days of the year & rain will be avoided.
2) A car that doesn't need restoration - at least not yet. I want something I can enjoy & drive now.
3) NO RUST.
4) A pre L. Or at least an L converted to pre l bumpers. Is that an easy conversion?
5) No widebody or GTS flares.
6) Anything from bone stock to highly modified, but..... I prefer mostly stock appearance. Some examples: A) Prefer Campy wheels, modern clone versions are fine. I'm not a fan of most other wheels. B) Rebuilt high horsepower motor, headers, loud mufflers, upgraded brakes, suspension, etc. are all good. EFI motors, etc. not good. C) Custom leather interiors, etc. are O.K. No cloth seats.
7) Color choices in order of preference: A: Orange B: Blue C: Red D: Yellow
8) and finally price. Preferably Under $40k. It is possible I would venture higher for the right car.

Here are some I am considering: Any comments are welcome!

Exactly what I am looking for appearance wise, but to much $ for this level of resto?

Not a pre l. Just like the front end so much more without the big bumpers. Rims are actually O.K. but I still prefer the original style.

Pretty nice. Is $48k to much? Wish the chrome wasn't (right down to the shifter gate as pointed out by a member that looked at it in person) blacked out.

What would you pay for this? $30's?

Looks nice. $45k. Undercoating a bit heavy - Hope it's not hiding anything.... Wish the motor was massaged more then just appearance.

Anybody have "my" Pantera?

Thanks for mulling through the long post & any comments would be appreciated!

Pete

Your criteria seem to be almost exactly the same as mine! And three of the cars you have listed are also on my radar. The red one in Denver is back on Ebay right now. One thing I don't understand is why people fail to provide pics of the engine (i.e., remove the freaking tray!). Also, as I've noted before on this forum, there sure seems to be a lots of Panteras out there that claim the A/C "only needs recharging". If that's the case, why not do it and then you wouldn't have this shortcoming in your for sale ad. There is a Grabber Blue one listed in Hemmings this month that is about 50 miles from me (in Alabama). The guy claims original paint, but I spotted overspray on the weatherstrip. He's asking $51K, but it's more like a $30K car.
That second car you listed (carcollectortrader) belongs to a member here, Jan (Does 200), and at the price he is asking it is a steal. If the bumpers are the only thing holding you back from that car it shouldn't.

I've been watching all the sites and very few of the cars I have seen come close to this value (there is a black and silver GTS thats a great deal also IMO).

I agree, it looks great. I don't really care for the pop rivet look of the GTS flares though. Reminds me of a off road mod.

Nope. This one. $10K cheaper.....

Here is a link to his posting. He's a member here also (laboss).

I agree on the rivets but thats something I could look past.
The orange Pantera belonging to Jan T (DOES200) is a very good deal at his asking price. Of course his car is an L, which you don't like. Mine was an L, I removed the bumpers. I installed the Amerisport bumpers in the front to hide the holes. I could have installed Amerisport bumpers in the rear too, instead I plugged the holes with rubber plugs.

If the orange car that Mayberry had for sale was what you were looking for, then you missed out on paying market value for the right car. Mike Mayberry knows what these cars are worth. When you buy a car from him you will not be getting a "deal" (i.e. below market price) but at the same time you won't be getting hosed. He lists them for what they're worth and normally doesn't barter the price. He only sells rust free examples. I bought mine from Mike. Mike is an active member of the Pantera community, an enthusiast himself, he owns 2 Panteras the last I heard.

That orange car was a show car. It was not just a Pantera in good shape. It had an expensive & gorgeous paint job, many parts were powder coated, lots of detail every where you looked. Plus it had a fresh motor. That's why it was $60K & not $50K. Look at it this way, somewhere out there, that orange Pantera has a new owner who is quite happy with his purchase. It could have been you.

Pantera pricing is up because interest in the cars is up, supply & demand is at work here. The best examples will command the highest prices. The description of the car you are looking for could be defined as a fairly good example.

I didn't realize the Mayberry car sold - it's listed for sale still on their website. I've been seriously looking for a car for about 4 days now, so I'm not exactly a fence sitter watching the good cars slip by...

I do realize the GTS flares are not some kind of cheesy add-on Bob added. I disagree with Pantera for adding them is all. Especially when then tires don't fill the wheel wells because of them. I also don't care the GTS writing across the side of the cars. Having said that, I would be proud to own one.
Allen's push button is a gorgeous example isn't it? Its not show room stock, it has been personalized to suit Allen, but its obviously been intended to be a show car. I've never seen Allen's car in person. Allen has been around this community a long time, he's not some stranger selling a Pantera hit & run style.

Since he hasn't listed a price, I prefer not to quote a price myself, the club pres shouldn't be setting the price on cars for sale or putting myself in a position where I'm undercutting the price of a member's car. If an owner lists a price, I'll comment if its a fair price, or below market value, otherwise I just keep my opinions to myself. Smiler

Yes, it's really nice. I like the the trend back towards stock he seams to be making. I agree with him about not having the heart to black out the yellow engine bay...

I'll see if he will set an asking price. I don't want to be insulting, but also don't feel qualified to know what it's worth.

Please DO NOT rush into buying a Pantera. There is a HUGE learning curve to buying these cars wisely. Now if you've been lurking here for a while, have already read through all the information at panteraplace and banzairunner you've started off right.

Now you need to find some local owners, inspect their cars and listen to their tips on what and how to evaluate a Pantera.

I spent about 1 1/2 years in my search, passed on some nice cars, but since I knew what my Pantera could be, I kept looking until I found someone who had already built what I seeked.

If you are looking for a builder, your selection is a lot easier, as long as you know how to look for rust and evaluate upgrades and the ZF. But if you're looking for something you can jump in and drive, please realize your search may well take many months - your four days is just a start.

Good luck in finding YOUR car - we are here to help.

The common denominator I hear so often from Pantera owners is out of all the Panteras they looked at prior to making a purchase, they bought their Pantera because it was the one that "spoke to them". This was my case too, when I saw 6018 in person, I knew it was the one.

I couldn't agree with Larry more, learn all you can about these cars, look at a bunch of them, don't be in a rush to purchase one. Eventually one will "speak to you". You'll know it when it happens.

Yep, it isn't so much we pick our cars as they picked us. Sort of like our wives.
Yep, I too agree with the three previous posts. It took me just over a year to find "Just the right one" for me. During that period I looked at several cars in all three western states (including three seperate airline ticket purchases to So Cal) before I found just what I wanted.
Thanks guys - probably good advice. I tend to be like a dog on a bone when I set my mind on something (at least fun stuff like car purchases!), to the point where I get little else done. I think part of my problem is I like everything from a stock early pushbutton to a highly modified big exhaust stroker! The trick is to find the one that's in between that suits my tastes - and is for sale.

It's an important purchase, so I guess I need to be patient and wait for the right car.
Two pod were on '71 and '72 pre-L with a smattering of pre-L cars with it. You'll find that with De Tomaso there were no real defining VINs for alot of changes. You'll also find that VINs don't necessarily follow build dates e.g. a build date on the #3000 car may be earlier than the build date on the #2950 car. Very confusing. That's one of the many reasons this forum is extremely helpful. There are a ton of peculiarities with this car. You're lucky to find it at the start of your search instead of after your purchase.

It's a 1969 427/435 L71 4-speed Tripower car from AZ (brought here last fall). No power windows/ power steering or AC. Just the way I like it. It is in good condition, but currently has a 350 in it. It is white (a 10 footer) and originally was riverside gold. Many items have been attended to over the years (Steering box, calipers, etc.) and it is very drivable.

I would like to get $15k for it as is.

I have a '68 427/390 complete engine and a very special '69 L71 427/35 complete engine that was a factory replacement block from 1969. It is 100% rebuilt mechanically & cosmetically, dyno'd and ready to go.
i would sell my 71 Push Button for the right price.

i want a car thats more of a driver. this one is very original and needs to be restored. i am hoping to get info on a members 72 and another guys black 74 GTS thats been in storage. i can afford both, so its no big deal. the Push Button can either wait until i have time for it, or i will find it a good home.

good hunting.
